They are still on the rocks and biting punch bait. I caught 36 today and kept a limit of 25. Filling the freezer.

You guys just fileting those or are you doing the old skin and gut method? I had the filet knife out while cleaning crappies and had about a 2 pound cat to clean. Worked pretty well really and pretty fast too. That is a lot of fish to clean there.

I always wondered why you guys keep them little channels cats? Is that all they can catch is little ones? Then I decided to keep some little ones,,,about 12" to 18 " .. I cut the heads off and gut them out. After that I put them in some brine for 12 hours or so. Then I rub a bit of brown sugar on them. I smoke them @ 200 dgrees or so for 3-4 hours. They are the best smoked fish on earth. They are good to keep cause they are everywhere and likely over populated in many lakes to the point they don't grow fast enough when there are so many little ones.

While you finish those I will try to learn to catch something besides "little ones".

Oh don't get me wrong. I just never understood why guys kept such little ones. Then I smoked them. I used to keep the big ones but now I'd just as soon put them back.

Sorry, maybe I took it wrong.

Yes, the smaller catfish are better to eat than the big ones. they just taste better.

Just never enjoyed the chewy nature and the flavour of cats over 5 pounds as much as those under 5 pounds.

We keep about 40% of the cats we keep the rest are usually over 5 pounds.

I would never consider keeping a cat over 10 pounds. They are just too much fun to catch and not nearly as good eating. Wish other folks fishing this area did the same. Catching those 10-25 pound cats is fantastic, wish we could catch more that size!
