I have one of those incredibly sweet but broken Ruger 44 Mag Carbines. This one was made in 1973 and like many of its contemporaries it has the broken trigger guard tab that turns it into a fond memory. To make matters worse, this one has a cracked stock too (cracked from loading port forward). Despite all its ailments, it is still a nice looking gun that sports an old-school USA-made Weaver V4.5B mounted in see-through rings. I have not taken any photos at this point as the gun looks good on the outside -- it's the inside that has problems. I can take photos if need be. I have no idea what this thing is worth as a parts gun, so I am going to see if I can find out. All monetary and trade offers considered.

Thanks, GeoW. I am going to check this out. There are different series of the 44 Carbine -- Series R, RS, SP and YR25. I am not sure if all the parts are interchangable. The NC-2 part shown in the schematic does not appear to show a tab (the piece that breaks off) that fits into the barrel block -- maybe it's just the drawing or maybe the part was changeed. The 44 Carbine I have is serial no. 100-44XXX, making it a 1973 model according to Ruger's site. The rifle actually belongs to a buddy. He has taken it to three smiths, all of whom told him the trigger guard is not available.

Anyone have further insight?

260Remguy put me onto a shop in NH that repairs these broken Rugers. I talked with the smith and am sending this one in. For ~$150.00 they will rebuild the broken trigger housing. If anyone else is in need of this service, PM me and I will give you the info.

The cracked stock can be repaired with gluing, I have fixed a couple with gorilla glue. Also Boyds stocks use to have replacement wood stocks.

I am looking for a Ruger 44 Carbine stock. Mine has a crack in it which I have attempted to repair before I came across this site. I noticed on this discussion that some had already tried using garrilla glue. If this does not work I am going going to be in need of one.

I just went out to e-gunparts and fond a trigger guard which they apparently have in stock.

To repair a crack in the stock (or any wood for that matter) try to find some Locktite 420. It is a very thin glue that will weep into cracks and this stuff is like superglue on steroids! I found some in a industrial supply house here in the Detroit area. It is not cheap I think I paid about $20 for a 1 oz bottle but it has lasted me about 4-5 years stored in the refridgerator. If you do get some make sure that you also have the unglue solution available because if you glue yourself or your fingers together you will have one hellova time getting unstuck. This stuff is awesome, believe me. I have also used it to glue metal and plastic together with excellent results.

Boyd's gunstocks carrys replacement stocks for under $100. I put one on my rifle and with about 3 hours of minor file and sanding and Watley oil stain/finish it looks great with the hand rubbed oil finish. It dropped right into the stock. If I can do it anyone can. I could of just used Varithane and it would have been faster and looked like the origional semi gloss finish.
