The BBC are reporting it was a SwiftAir MD80 with Spanish crew and pilots. Apparently it had requested a change of route to avoid storms and also to avoid a conflict with another aircraft in the area. Shortly after contact was then lost..
I am guessing this will probably be weather related, but things will turn "interesting" if the wreckage does not turn up...

Suppose it was planned to crash into Jerusalem. The Israelis would have to decide to either let it crash and kill untold numbers, or shoot it down and kill the 100+ on board. Ether way would be a boon for the muslims.
