Well then, why not .30-06 vs .308?

Another shooter was firing his 338 Lapua yesterday, about three benches over from me. The muzzle brake looked similar to this:

[Linked Image]

Its bark wasn't nearly as obnoxious as the Swiss cheesed one on the 30-378 Weatherbys I've been around.

I'm afraid you're not too bright if that isn't telling you something.

I have a .338 WM with a brake. There are times I take it to the range and then never take it to a bench because of the problems it would cause other shooters. Basic courtesy!

I have a braked .338 WM. If there is anybody else at the range at all I immediately unscrew the brake and shoot the rifle sans brake.

Why does it say "338 Lapua Vs.30/378" as a title to the thread on the forum list page and "30/06 Vs. 30/378" when you open the thread?

I'd actually shoot an '06. I'd laugh at the idea of shooting a 30/378. I'm sure it is a useful cartridge, but I don't have a use for one, and the noise/recoil/concussion wouldn't be worth it to me. I've seen YT videos of guys shooting big guns on a dare--not funny.

I'm more inclined to go smaller capacity than '06 before larger.

Well in my short 59 years, I have shot and hunted with quite a few rifles and cartridges, the 378 WM and by extention the 30-378 was the only cartridge I would not shoot after the first shot, to much of a good thing if you can call it that. As I get older, I think a 308 or an 30-06 is more than plenty, and to be frank I shoot a 7mm RM these days, more because of the rifle than not, and I will tell you my current hunting a 30-30 would be just about perfect, if there ever is anything that is perfect!

I am going to shoot a buddies rifle he uses for team usa on Saturday. It is a Stolle 308. He is also bringing his 338 Lapua and a 30/378 ultralight. By your logic I won't notice a difference when I shoot them at 1k yards. I hope your right:)

.30/378, .338 Lapua, .300 Wby, .300 RUM... Pffffftt! 1000 yds.... Give me a break!!

Hell, a REAL hunter only needs a .30-30. File off the front sights. Grease up the barrel really good with Vaseline. Sneak up behind your moose or elk or grizzly, shove the barrel about a foot-and-a-half up his azz, pull the trigger, and you're done. Nuttin' to it. No sightin' in. No muzzle blast. No walkin' 3/4 of a mile from where you shot all the way out to where the dead animal lays.

Or you can leave the front sight on and use it like a Butt-Out when you pull it out.

LOL I like the butt out comment. To be honest the farthest I have shot game is 250 and most are more like 25 yards or less. He offered to let me shoot at his range with his guns so I figured it would be fun to try it out and see what all the real long range magnum shooting buzz is about. I think it goes to 1300 or something around there.

Last time I loaded for them I still used .308 dia. projectiles. But I use the same diameter bullets in my 30-30's I believe we could start calling the .308 the .308/.308 cause they are still .308

Better yet,I will not feel a thing!!!I find the true test is to put the butt of the stock against your forehead instead of your shoulder. It is much more sensitive and you will be able to readily detect any difference in recoil.Let me know how that turns out!!! grin

After I had a KDF varmint brake put on my shortened .338 I used it about three times at the range and on one hunting trip.
I then put the brake in the die box and the thread cover on the rifle. The .30-378 Weatherby's factory brake brake is darn obnoxious.

That makes a .30-378 less attractive than an '06 to me. I do elk hunt occasionally on the coast with a fellow who uses one. He loves it.

URGENT! SAFETY WARNING!!

Be sure to grease up the EXTERIOR of the barrel ONLY. Keep the Vaseline out of the bore. It's not clear whether a big game animal's interior could retain all the possible shrapnel resulting from an overpressure event caused by a bore clogged with Vaseline.

It would be wise, too, to put a condom, blue electrical tape, or other protective material on the muzzle end of the barrel, so that unevacuated moose/elk/grizzly poop doesn't enter the muzzle when it's inserted, creating a barrel obstruction with resultant overpressure complications.

(It's probably best to use the tape. Many condoms come with a warning about possible failure caused by personal lubricants containing petroleum products. Or, substitute something like KY for the Vaseline if you really prefer to use a condom.)

Yes there is a term for that, get off my range, I'm the owner of the range and it's time for me to use it. There just lucky I don't charge them dues to use it. They don't complain, where else can shoot up to 1500 yards off concrete benches.
