The original military load was a very long round nose jacketed bullet at 156 grains. 160 grain bullets were common in commercial ammunition.
Here's a link to an article by Muledeer which discusses reloading for the cartridge and the basis for the long throat. http://gunsmagazine.com/the-6-5x55/
He discusses having the parallel section of the throat on his custom barrel cut slightly shorter than spec.

I realize this and unfortunately the Sweede suffers as a result.

It's loaded down as well.

They need to modernize it with modern bullets and pressures and if the old rounds don't fit, to bad. An old fart mentality holds this cartridge in bondage to 1896.

If I wanted to shoot Noslers, Horns, and ect I would have bought a 270.

I was hoping for a lightweight, light recoil LR rifle.

Why not go shoot it first before giving up on it?

It just might do all that needs doing - long throat and all?

I'm not giving up on it. I'll be shooting it.

I also ordered some 140 Hybrid bullets and hope they will shoot accurate.

Are they making a 260 or 6.5 creedmoor or 6.5X284?

No, just the Sweede in 6.5

I would have preferred the 6.5x284.

What a couple of other people have mentioned is indeed exactly why the throat is so long: That's the standard factory throat for the 6.5x55.

If they put a shorter throat in it there can be problems, especially with some European factory ammo. My own 6.5x55 is built on an FN Mauser 98 action with short "target" throated reamer. Both Norma and RWS factory ammo result in too-high pressures, because the bullets are jammed into the throat.

But even Berger VLD's sometimes shoot very well when jumped, and the long standard throat in a 6.5x55 doesn't mean it won't shoot with various bullets. I once owned a Ruger 77 Mark II in 6.5x55 and it shot not just very well but EXTREMELY well with a variety of bullets, all of which had to be more-or-less jumped. have seen the same thing in a bunch of other rifles.

Also, I would bet Melvin wouldn't charge a whole lot to set the barrel back and rechamber with a shorter throat. Somebody else could do the same thing and rechamber to 6.5/.284. The barrel would then be free-floated, but that's not all bad either.

But you can't expect an American factory 6.5x55 to have a shorter-than SAAMI throat.

MD, I greatly appreciate your input. Thank you.

Certainly gives me something to think about doing.

I'd probably leave it as a Sweede for lighter recoil.

I would think you could load it to 260 Ackley speeds. That's not a bad thing either.

Yeah, it's capable of a little more zip than the .260, but not a lot.

Well, Travis, you were wrong: It didn't get interesting. But even the best on the Campfire are wrong once in a while....

With Berger bullets?

No, I have only used 130 Accubonds and Scirocco's to date. I have not duplicated the group I posted on page 11 of this thread but have sent enough downrange to be fairly confident this is a steady 3/4 - 1" rifle.

A sample of one is not much to go by but it appears to me that Forbes is holding up their end of the bargain.
