Another mod 70 lover over on another site bought a mod 70 target in a non checkered sporter, varmint stock at last RIA auction. Turns out SN matched up with Van Ordens' guns. I think 2700 tax tag and title to his door ! Many years ago I missed one just like it as I hit the 'BUY NOW' button on Guns International thinking it worked just like GB. Did not work that way and another guy slipped in behind and got the gun. I thought it was high at the time at 1500! Little did I know!!! I still have pix of that gun and get pizzed everytime I look at it! LOL v best winpoor

Hi Bob, Here is some info on the Van Orden gun. After leaving the military he ordered special mod 70 targets, some in sporter stocks some in marksman. Coast Guard and MTU , rifle teams used them, he tried to get the Army to buy them for sniping. I think the CIA ended up with some as well.

Good article, that is a photo of Carlos Hatchcock with his model 70 and Unertl mounted scope on top.

He made a few good shots with a model 70. grin

That position is not one I would use.

Maybe it was just to make a photo?

Folks I need to clear up a mistake, I quoted I hit buy now on Guns International, it was Guns America ! Their buy now does not work like Gun Broker as I learned the hard way! otherwise the dirty Van Orden pictured at top of post would have been mine! I was pizzed to no end! All the gun needed was a good cleaning! It had been standing in a corner collecting dust for 25 years a nephew had no idea what the gun was!....I even tried buying from new owner to no avail! Win a few and loose a few.The give away was no checkering, SN was Van Orden, non checkered sporter, varmint stock! very best WinPoor

The Coast Guard, CIA and MTU guns had the hell shot out of them, a goodly number went to Gen Van Ordens ex military pals who knew they were state of art shooters, many were just put up for investments. very best winpoor
