Well it was a good one but, unfortunately, prompted by a fatality last week at the nearby Daewoo Shipyard that actually sits in the town I live, Okpo. A welder decided to step out on a temporary structure without tieing off (we all must wear fall protection any time we are outside). The weld attaching the temporary structure failed and he fell 35 feet, first bouncing off of a steel member at the first 10 feet then landing on the floor of the dry dock, dead. A 28 year old with two children... My walk went pretty well as we have required that all of us, 280 or so, be out on the modules rotating every two hours in the day. Full coverage if you will. Amazing what just having the Company colors out there does. Anyway, as stated my walk was a good one on Friday from noon to 4:00. I thought I would turn gloom to bloom and just show some pretty badazz construction so here goes. A couple of the 4000+ tonne modules. There is propbably 50 of these stations running. Add another few hundered welding machines. A bit of weld prep. The trunnions being fab'd that will be welded to the top deck to allow the final rigging and placement.

It's fascinating seeing prints come to life. I can't imagine a job that big.

Headache and heartache, followed by the amazement of it all, each and every time.
I believe if not for your career in the Coast Guard, it would have been a world where you would have thrived and far succeeded even your own life's expectations.

I feel honoured to have worked for GTRC and Algoship for so long and to have witnessed the wonder of the world of Shipbuilding.

How long from first cut to completion? First, on safety. Culturally, one cannot advise, demand, whatever, anything to an elder. So the young that we can get to tend to work safely but they cannot advise someone senior in age when an unsafe act is being performed. This is a tough nut to crack. I probably spend 30% of my time on managing the safety. It took about a year to build the hull. Another two or so years to complete the topsides which I am managing. The modules I am building make up the topsides. Here's a rendering of the total kit. A pretty slick piece of kit is the turret, the largest ever, that will be fastened to the sea floor and allow the ship to swing as dictated by wind and water. The entire facility is designed to withstand a 1 in 10,000 year typhoon. Then there is the subsea stuff. A bit about it all.

Wow Ed that's a Damn big ship, I'm not sure I could walk it without takin' a nap break. Pretty impressive to say the least.

Well, that is pretty damn cool! I used the info Ed posted to find a very interesting link where you can read A LOT MORE about the ship. Shell's Preulde FLNG Guys, click the link for some amazing numbers (and videos) even if you are normal -- i.e. NOT an engineer John

It's not really a ship, it's a floating platform I would guess.
Correct, no propulsion system?

Only propulsion to allow it to move around the turret and lock in place for offloading LNG. As it will be fixed to the seabed via the turret for 25 years there is no need for anything more.

BTW, thanks for the explanations. I thought it might've been a massive kimchi processing plant...

So, it will be a large, floating central facility where hydrocarbons are gathered and piped to there for distribution?
