Looking to build a load. I have a single shot Knight KP1 with a 24" stainless 30-06 barrel with 1-10 twist. I'm looking for a bullet that might shoot well for Mule Deer at both long and short range? I say this because either one is shooting in lanes under 100 yards or long range canyon shoots at around 600 yards. Shots in the middle aren't likely.
Any ideas at where to start? Maybe VLD's? Weights?
Thanks!

I'd give the 155 Scenar a try.

Hydra How much experience do you have shooting to 600 yards? And what is your scope setup?

I am setting up a simple gun with a short LOP for my 12 YO son, that's all. The question is about the projectile, not my experience, but thanks. The gun is set up with a Talley one piece, and a Nikon BDC 4-12X40 Prostaff #6749. http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/Nikon-Products/Riflescopes/PROSTAFF-4-12x40-Matte-BDC.html The gun is free floated from the factory and brake action, scope attaches to the barrel only....ect. Then again older Knights are know for great quality. Rosco1 <--- Not a bad idea. How do you think that bullet would fair on cow elk? I have seen some information out there stating they should work fine.

Are you saying you want to set up your 12 y/o for 600 yard mulie hunting with a Knight/Prostaff/30-06, and you don't know enough about LR to choose a decent bullet???
Holy [bleep]. Poor kid.

Shane I thought the same thing. Whatever bullet is most accurate in the rifle is where I'd start. Many good bullets from bergers, scenar, Nosler accubonds or ballistic tip.

I probably sound like a jackazz, but sounds like the blind leading...
Then I thought to myself, how much time will the kid have to practice with this rig, out to 600+, before season starts?

Sir,
You asked about 100 or 600 yard bullets for mule deer. I asked about experience because a 12 year old with a 30/06, Knight rifle, and a Nikon with jintzy reticle being led by a gentleman that needs to ask what bullet, is not a recipe for success.
You may take this personal, but based on those factors alone, you need to slow waaay down.....

Thanks for your ignorant words gentleman.... .....Now can we get back on the subject? Formid<--- No you asked about my experience and hardware before learning about my son or the weapon. You are trying to justify yourself now. The material is right up there ^^^^, I suggest you re-read. rosco1 was nice enough to leave me some info, and thank you very much. 805<--- I know what bullets have the name and creditable features, I'm looking for a weight range to start and bullet type. I mean even a Speer BTSP would work for close/medium. I would like some ideas then see what is avalible in my area. What weight to start for a Green Mountain barrel? I know for a fact a lot of you have them for hell sakes. I understand you guys want the top of the line fire arm with top of the line optics and all that BS for 600. This is not my first day nor is it my sons. Point of the matter is I have a decent gun and a basic scope and one of the only ring/base sets available I can find on it. We don't plan on shooting 600 with it but if he can do it great. Most shots should be short, (I'm sure with this set up 25 yards might be hard in your eyes). But if we need to take a long shot I'm taking along something that can do it. If I can find a decent combo then great, if not then I have other back ups. For hell sakes, maybe I came to the wrong room to ask for basic help. God only knows how smooth bore muskets of the late 1700's shooting round balls hit targets of over 1/2 mile.

Hydro From 0-600 I would recommend the 165gr Nosler accubonds or ballistic tip. Load it with h4350 and see how your gun likes it. If you want to try a berger then try the 168vld. Another thing to consider is the recoil for a 12yo may be a bit much.

Dang, thinking about that recoil and it does bother me now you brought it up. Maybe he should be running a 270 or 7mm-08 ....Hmmmm....Anyway my other boy might want to try it out though. Maybe we should just use 30-30 brush guns for the short lane shoots and call it a day?

You don't need to spend a ton of money these days to have a capable rig.
The Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor with a 10X SWFA would be a sweet rig, with great ballistics and modest recoil.
I'm a big 30-06 fan, and I push the 208 AMax most of the time, but recoil is there in my sporterweight rig.
As mentioned above, the 155 Scenar has a good track record. I've ran those at 3030 fps via 22" bbl and RL15, with sub-moa accuracy.

Whatever you go with, make sure you (and your son) get in plenty of trigger time at and beyond expected hunting distances.

Hydra You can also load him some reduced loads with something like the 125gr accubonds or ballistic tip. Get him comfortable with the rifle and then load up full charge rounds latter. Also throw a limbsaver pad or decelerator pad on it. He can learn to shoot accurately and without flinching.
Or get him a 6.5 or 243win. Those are light recoil and plenty of power for him to learn to shoot and hunt.

Maybe we should just use 30-30 brush guns for the short lane shoots and call it a day? That all depends on how tough your boy is. If I want a "one and done" hunting bullet for the 30.06 I start with the 180gr Nosler Ballistic tip. However I won't start my kids with that load. For deer it's more likely to be 130 or 140gr NBT out of a .270 Win with a good recoil pad. If you are still in the process of choosing a caliber, 6.5x55 Sweed with high BC 140gr NBT's and the rounds moderate recoil could be an option as well. Especially since the 140 NBT's are on sale: http://www.shootersproshop.com/nosl...sler-6-5mm-140gr-ballistic-tip-blem.html

Hydra- i would use the one that will shoot a 5 shot group of 6" or less at your futhest distance ( 600 yards). usually it takes a little experimenting. i use 50.5 grain of varget, 168berger, lapua brass, 210M primer. loaded .030 off , in my 30-06s. i would for sure try a 168 CBT or a 168 accubond too.
