Our penal system is big business run amok at taxpayers' expense.

The problem is solvable. In simple, understandable terms.

I worked 18 years in Pelican Bay. Chris Acosta is a good friend.

The real problem is the drug war. Society is creating this underground economy and its participants. If not for the drug war those criminals would be picking lettuce and displacing the jobs illegals take.

I was hoping you would weigh in. I have no way of judging an article like this, whether it is 1% accurate or 99%.

I appreciate your comments.

Public humiliation and canings. Mostly canings. Pain is a powerful deterrent if applied in large enough doses. And I do mean LARGE doses, for extended periods. With sleep deprivation.

In 1984 interviewed for a position with Edmonds community college teaching electronics at Monroe medium security reformatory. I was in for ~ 6 hours of interview. I had to give up my car keys to get in, because someone might make a shank out of them.

Not only did I not get an offer. There were 6 members of the faculty lined up like a firing squad telling me I was unfit because I was "a bleeding heart liberal".

They were super hard. They saw me as soft.

Do you really want to give the government the power to do that? Talk about the "slippery slope" possibilities!

Yep, I've been saying that for years.

The cost of incarceration, both in $$ and in damage to society is totally reprehensible.

Agreed. And I suspect you are right, it would go poorly. The problem is the corruption of man, men in all stations of life. If we could get level-headed men to mete out the justice to the worst of these animals we might get some control back. As it is, they run loose.

That would be my preference. No punishment pe se, no system of organized cruelty, just remove them from society permanently.

Except I'd change things to make a serious, really serious shot at trying to keep the first timers from becoming graduates of crime college. Then toss them out of society on the 2nd offense.

No, that is a poor use for steel. Lead on the other hand...why I've read some here at the 'Fire have enough to solve California's problem single handed.

We should neither support or tolerate this scum.

Well force is government, and society does not really let the prison system use force, so yes the gangs, who have no hesitation at using violence are the source of order, any unpaid debt will bring swift justice.

Whenever you study social systems with an understanding of the observable laws of economics, and I mean those understandings of economics that Adam Smith and the Austrian Schools would agree with, you will have a firm grasp of the dynamics.

Prison isn't sugar coated, and it sure is not socialistic, despite the fact that America runs them on an idealistic gay socialist paradise model.
