Accepted an invite for a whitetail hunt early Dec., which I immediately leveraged into some p.m. predator calling. :-)

I've hunted South Texas on several occasions, but not the Del Rio area. Not even sure what ranch I'll be hunting yet. Any local intel to share?

Some fairly good deer in the area. Around Rocksprings for sure, could easily find black buck and Axis freeranging, along with feral sheep.

Lots of rocks. And a few more rocks. Some fairly interesting terrain.

If you pass on a 140 class whitetail buck you've made a mistake basically IMHO.

The area I guided was more Rocksprings than Del Rio but that ranch had big numbers of deer. And that can vary from area to area depending.

I've hunted Rocksprings before, just haven't been over near Del Rio yet. Was wondering if it's more brush country (like Freer) or more rocky (like Rocksprings). All I know is that it's a big low fence ranch with supposedly decent deer, but we'll run 30 miles or so to call predators at night on another big ranch that they say doesn't get any calling pressure. Sad to say, I'm more excited about that. I am a night-calling addict...

It will be a short report: There won't be anything left to shoot.

Try to find some grown up hogs to pick on this time. Those dink hogs don't count. ;-)

We prefer the term 'suckling pig'.......

And those little bastids are sure tasty!

Our 'big ones' were 85 lb 'eaters'....

Wellllll....in my defense the pocket pigs are easier to pack out, and the landowner was NOT open to the suggestion of letting them walk and grow up.... eek

Not Del Rio, north of Dryden at Independance Creek Ranch for 5 years. Valleys and big small rocky dry moutains. Lots and lots of deer, turkey, coons, dove, quail and wets.

The area is all deep clay to loamy soil. General flood plane between the rivers Rio Grande and Nueces. Thick brush with arroyos to savanna.

Best Margarita in the world used to be just across the border from Del Rio in Ma Crosby's.
We thought nothing about crossing the Border to Acuna when I was in College, 30 years ago. Wouldn't go across for ANYTHING, nowadays.

It's always been great hunting & fishing there on Devils River. Buddy owns a Ranch there that has awesome hunting for Whitetails & exotics. Fantastic dove hunting, also.
