Most of you only load up 1 bullet, powder combo for your all around 30-06 hunting round in Alaska?

I been kicking around and 06 or a .338 Win Mag and one load for all hunting. K.I.S.S idea.

54gr H414 under a 168tsx lately. Before that it was some IMR 4350 under a 200 partition. Both are deadly.

Thanks, I been using just the factory Cor-lokt rounds, but reloading is the way to go.

Winchester cases, 57.5 grains of H-4350, lit by federal 210 primers, topped off with a 180 grain TTSX.

This.

If I wanted one load to do everything, the one stated above would be it.

I hear that:

I like the KISS approach. However, the 200gr. PT (Phil mentioned) would also work..

It would be the 168-gr TTSX and 210s on the bottom of Win cases. Probably 57+ grains of H4350 which I know works well but am still tinkering with R17 because I have three pounds of it.

Tried to make 200-gr ABs sing early this summer but my rifle said, "no thankey."

61 gr Rl-22 under a 200 gr Partition, lit with a cci-250 primer in WW brass gives 2700 fps in my 24" barreled pre-64 M-70.

+1. I was wondering the same thing. Seems like an awfully stiff charge/ a lot of powder for an 06...

Thanks everyone, I meant 59 grs NOT 69 and that gives the 200 gr Partition 2700fps from the 22 inch barrel on my rifle.

I can live with anything in 165-180 grain loads that go 1.5 MOA or less. Less is better of course. If you can't kill with that, the load likely ain't the problem, with due diligence to terminal performance. I've gone the premium route and come back to mostly plain-janes (I reserve the right.... etc... smile ), as I've not noticed any difference in the end game... but then I'm chea....er...economically minded... But if premiums crank your chain (especially if they offer a significant increase in accuracy, or the situation begs it), by all means have at it.

I've never been all warm and fuzzy about 150 gr. loads, but that's what I'm using right now - and I have hundreds of the durn things (Corelokts) for reloading- came with a remote cabin (and rifle) I purchased 40 years ago. I'm gonna have to use those up one of these days... but it's expensive to reload where I am now. Powder/haz-mat, airfreight, etc. (Alaska Airlines lets one ship 50 lbs loaded ammo as free baggage- so why fight it? smile )

The Rem. factory Corlokts are doing just fine (around MOA) out to 500 on caribou, and on a moose at 50 yds 4 years ago, tho now I'm into a couple boxes of factory Hornady Super Performance. Tho slightly less accurate than the Rems, they are much flatter at 300-500. I can live with that.

I still prefer the 165-180's tho.. Personal prejudice, as I haven't seen a whit of diff in terminal performance between 150-180 weights, from 100 lb black bear thru moose.

By the way, Finn Aaguard showed that 180's penetrated wet telephone books better than any thing else lighter or heavier. This was a number of years ago, probably just plain-janes, assuredly not the TSX -TTSX and other modern premiums.

If I were to pick just one bullet weight for anything that might hit the fan, I'd take a priemum 180 bullet weight if it shoots well.

Just how much over-penetration do you need anyway?

Dang - I just may make that my sig-line.... smile

165gr TSX over 58gr of Big Game, ignited by CCI250's gives me exactly 2800fps and less than minute of angle accuracy.

I've got a few hundred 150 Core Loc's here also, I use them as practice ammo. They're accurate enough for picking off clay pigeons out to 300 yards or so.

I'm currently using Federal HE. I haven't gotten around to sitting down and trying to duplicate it at the reloading bench yet as I have other priorities at the moment.

Or best yet.. run the 30-06 brass through my 338-06 size die. LOL

I have not been happy with 180 partitions in my 300 wtby, John says I would be much happier with 200s there. A stouter bullet.

But since the advent of Barnes, thats the route I"d most likely take.

Been loading 180 swift Sciroccos in my brothers 30-06 to just over 2900 fps with rl-17 and he has great results on game and shoots 3 shots touching out of his Forbes 24" barrel. But phil's 200 Npt load is attractive and I run that same bullet at 2550 out of my 20" barrel .308.

Is a 180 grain insufficient for moose, are these loads with 225 grain bullets for the most part Brown bear loads?

There's nothing wrong with 180's for moose (Partition here)

[Linked Image]

180 Woodleigh didn't cause much suffering either

[Linked Image]

The 220 Core-lokt works even when it tumbles some.

Heck, I've even killed a couple with the 190 Interlocks 79S remarked on.

I've had good luck with R-22 in my M700 and any 180-200gr bullet I stick in it. Load workup has been finding where the lands are, picking a seating depth to start, picking a charge of 22 over a 215, shooting tight group, loading up enough to hunt with. Three totally different bullets in a row have worked out just exactly like that. 58gr with 200's to 60 with 180's. Not top end loads, but velocities have been right where I expected, with consistency and accuracy to spare.

For deer, antelope and miscellaneous medium size critters I use factory loads Federal Premium 30-06, 150 grain Sierra Game King BTSP at 2,910fps. Real accurate in my rifle.

For larger critters I use 180 grain Nosler Partitions with Spitzer points, 61 grains RL22, 2,880 fps. The trajectories are close enough that I can switch loads without adjusting my scope.

Actually I have pretty much stopped using the 150s because I bought a new 25-06 that I love.

If I could only get one bullet weight for my '06s, premium or c&c, it would be the 180. 165 would be second choice..

I really don't like the 150s I'm now using, which are performing beyond reproach.....

Lordy, I hate that... smile

I load a 165 Interlock over 57 grains of IMR 4350. Does most anything.

A 180 Nosler over RL22 or H1000 in 300WM does alot of work.

In 338, a 225IB over RL22 was used on my last bear. Performed well and very accurate. Could be used for most anything, so that would be my pick for a one gun/one round KISS plan.

For Deer I like 55 grs of 4895 and a 150gr bullet, and am now looking at the Ttsx. Kills like lightening on deer and such. For bigger stuff, but also deer, the 165gr Ttsx or Nosler partition and 60grs of IMR 4350 SC. The 150 gr load chronographs at 3000 fps and the 165 at 2800 even. I used the 165gr load in Africa to take an Eland with. Hit behind the left ribs and went clear to the right shoulder. Think the Ttsx will do the same. Wife killed 2 Kudu, an Oryx and a Zebra with one shot each using that load. Before anyone hollers "hot" , don't. Check the loading manuals, these are in some, but been so long since I looked at them for this load, been using it since 1972, but with the Nosler partition at the time, that I don't recall which manual it's in.

I used the 150 XFB a few times on caribou with my 30-06. On one occasion I drove one through both side of two caribou and only failed to drill a third (I'm quite sure) because there weren't three in a line. (I wasn't trying to kill two either but the second ran behind as I squeezed; no biggy with a 5 per/day limit.)

It would be interesting to see what the '06 would do with those old Xs at plus 4000 fps.perhaps a bit more destruction than we're used to with monos.

Klik,

A hunting pard of mine drove a Hornady 180 round nose thru a pair of bull elk. Fortunately, his son hadn't filled yet so it turned out ok. He never saw the other bull. He started dressing the one he shot and called his son to come help. He was elbow deep when his son called to tell him that he'd found the bull...ooopps!

I loaded up some 180 Hornady InnerLocks to 2800 fps out of my 24" bbl. Remington 700 for a late season cow elk hunt. This is a meat hunt. You fellas think that I'll be O.K. or I could load 180 Nosler PT's but they don't shoot as accurately out of my rifle. I kind of want to try a cup and core non-premium bullet.

My rifles love anything I stuff into them. However, if I were going to go to Alaska with my 30-06, I'd probably listen to Phil's advice. He's one of the guys that has "been there done that":
