Very interesting info, I find with the absence of powder selection up here that it might be a good idea to find a powder or powders that work best and just buy bigger quantities of a few powders, and make it easier than trying to find all the ones I used to use.

760/H414 for you my friend, closely followed by H4350.

It's a toss up between IMR 4895 and IMR 3031. I can get a useful load with any bullet in any round I load, all 32 of them.

Anything around Varget, RL15, 4895 for just one, if you tend to load with somewhat lighter bullets.

4350 for just one, if you load toward the higher end of bullet weights.

Overall, I'd go with H4895 if you had to have only one.

All you need is 4895 for rifles and Unique for pistols. You don't *need* any cartridge that requires anything else. smile

I remember using H380 in a 460 Weatherby with 350 grain Hornady's. It's actually designed for a 22-250.

Is there a powder that can do it all?

Varget or 4895 could do really well for a lot of them.

And I just recently dropped some cash on a bunch of generic 8 pounders for rainy days....

I will still use specific powders for certain tasks, holding the 8s back as reserves...

BUT I"m also trying to come up with maybe a pistol powder, shotgun powder and a small rifle, medium rifle and large rifle and buy a couple of 8s of each as backup to the backup...

PS years ago I did try to cut down to one powder, and though it did work, it was not the best case... and have given that up totally...

Will these 3 powders that you mention also work in 9mm, 357, 44mag, 45 colt and 454 casull. Also looking for something that would work in those calibers that might also work in 444 Marlin.

I've successfully used Unique in the 9mm, 38 sp, 357 mag, 44 mag, 45 acp, 45 colt, 480 and several rifle calibers for mild cast loads, I've successfully used 2400 with the 357 mag, 44 mag, 480 and several rifle calibers for cast loads. So I would consider those powders to be two extremely useful powders, though I'd hate to limit myself to them.

I think with the 444 you'd want something a tad slower like RL7.

Heard a story years ago about a fella claiming his "bug out rifle" would be any rifle in .220 Swift, bullets, primers and a pound of Unique. Assorted loading tools also, I suppose.

10gr of unique has shot well in every pistol or lever gun i've ever tried it in, particularly if you shooting cast bullets of any kind.

10 gr of unique works well in the 44 mag, 45 colt (modern guns) and the 480, I would not load that stiff of a charge in the smaller bores or 45 acp, though in many cases you couldn't fit that much powder in the case.

If I was restricted to two powders for rifles, would be Varget and IMR7828.

Leave me some Unique for my wheelguns.

H4895 covers a lot of territory. I've used it in 30-30, .308, 30-06 .223, 7.5 Swiss, .300 Savage, .303 Brit, and even the .243.

There's always going to be one propellant/bullet/charge combination that stands out from the rest, but unless you're working with the big case/little bullet magnums, H4895 will give good service in a typical bottle necked rifle cartridge.

The .243 is the most overbore chambering that I've used H4895 in and it produced much better results than I expected for its burning rate.

Another one is IMR 4320.

During the powder/primer panic buying awhile back i would see dusty cans of 3031 and 4320 sitting ignored.

Kind of surprised no one is going for IMR 4064. Could probably make that work for my guns too. Or RL 19. Maybe RL 15.
