Are 99 receivers hardened behind the bolt only, made of hard steel entirely, or selectively hardened at all?

Depends on when it was born. There's a letter from Savage somewhere around here in the back posts. Maybe Rory will be kind enough to use his googlefu and find it. wink grin

I ran across the letter just the other day. It was from W.H. McCrillis, Arms Service Division of Savage, June 4, 1954 in reply to some question asked by Mark Benenson.

"Rifles between 90,000 and 266,000 in most instances, should not be converted to 250-3000 and .300 calibers. The processing of material used in the manufacture of the latter rifles differs from the method we use today.

Although we do convert rifles with serial number under 266,000 to 250-3000 and .300 calibers here at the factory, we at the same time retemper them. This service is available only for conventional calibers which means we would not be able to render it to a rifle having a Zipper barrel."

Then in a letter of July 29, 1954:

"In reply to yours of July 20th, our charge for retempering the frame of a Model 99 lever action rifle having serial numbers between 90,000and 266,000 is $10.00."

Savage...never say "never".

Wonder what they charge for re-tempering today...

I don't think they will touch the old lever guns for any price.
