Any Mnnlicher Schnauer experts in the house? This is a military configuration rifle marked 1908 on the left rail, it does not have the rotary style magazine. See pictures. Anyone know what this is? I thought it was a MS 1908, but now I don't know.

Thanks.

fug me im not sure, its not the Greek Military rifle as they have the rotary magazine(just sold one of those).....the Dutch Mannlichers have a straight stack mag that drops below the stock...im interested in hearing what others say, whatever it is i wager its not terribly common

What's that (word) on the left rail before "1908"?

The split receiver, bolt body and bolt release look familiar but that's about where it ends. Probably built by Steyr but have no idea of model.

8x57 or 8x56?

Left rail is stamped "Modell 1908"

I can't find any Caliber markings anywhere.

There are no other markings other than a few more of the "Crown over S" cartouche on various metal parts and the stock.

Whatever it is, it looks very well made and in great shape. Kind of handsome in a way.

Looks very similar to the Hungarian Model 43, but with a one-piece stock and different hand-guard. Also, the 43 has no crossbolt ( the 35 does).

Maybe a "sporter" built on a 43?

the 1927 Greek Mannlicher Schonauer i sold put any modern production rifle to shame as far as fit and finish.....whole lot of the non war time production military rifles to come out of Germany, especially pre-WWI were of outstanding quality.....my understanding was the early Greek MS's were at near the top of the heap though the 1895 Chilean i had made by Lowe was damn fine aswell....by the above pics this rifle is way up there aswell....

Like Joe, I think it is a Haenel. These were based on the 1888 Commission Rifle action, but with an internal box magazine as well as guides and a thumb cut in the receiver for stripper clips. The pivoting floorplate was a Haenel patent. Haenel made these for a number of customers, seeking sales to China in particular, with the M1907, and selling some to Paraguay and Brazil too. There were also sporters, usually M1909.

Thanks, I figured the brain trust here would come through. This does appear to be a Haenel modell 1908.
