Thinking of building a 7-08ai. The question is what velocity are y'all getting with heavier bullets such as 162 or 168gr. Also what barrel lengths are y'all running?

21.5" pipe running 140 2980 fps, 150 2850 fps and 160 2710 fps is a really fun gun. It's my wife's everything gun. I'm sure with 2 1/2 " more inches of pipe it would really spit them out.

Having had as many as 4 7-08AIs at the same time, with 22-24" tubes, I have never been able to get more than 3000 with a 130 ESP Raptor bullet. I have run 150s but only could get 2830 at most. Maybe I had slow barrels (all different makes in each rifle). 162s would only do 2700ish at best. I have used R-15, Varget, 4064, 4350, VV 540, BLc2, H380 and others. About 100fps max over the standard 7-08. While I really ,like the round, I am not sure it is worth the fireforming and added expense. But I still love it...

I have a 7mm-08 AI that i picked up from a hide member here. The only thing is it had a 22" barrel.
I can tell u I have 2 other regular 7mm-08's and that due to fireforming brass and differnt dies u are not gaining anything by going the AI in a 7mm-08.

With the exception of not trimming, I completely agree.

NM,

For reference I get 2600 fps with the 162gr, RS Big Game, 22", plain 7-08. Had a few guys tell me that they got ~2700 fps with H4350 and vanilla 7-08.

Lee has a load listed that calls for 48.0grns H4350 at a COAL of 2.875 for 2714fps. I have never had a 7mm-08 that had a mag box that would accomadate a load longer than 2.830. When I tried H4350 at 2.830 I couldn't get anywhere close to 48.0 grns w/o pressure signs and was having trouble reaching velocities over 2600fps.

RL17 worked well for me in my Montana giving 2675Fps with the 162 AMAX's at 2.800 COAL. Accuracy was good and there were no pressure signs.

I get good accuracy with Varget and 140 NBT's in my 7-08, a non-AI'd 22" barreled Kimber, but I can get better velocity with Big Game. 2,900 and no pressure signs. Norma brass and a TULA LRM primer, with Nosler's max. book load.

I can run well over 3000 with the varget but it's the wife's gun and she prefers the lighter load due to recoil. At max load it comes back together in the accuracy department. The Ai was what I taught her to shoot and she shot a lot with me before the kids came along so no trimming brass was wonderful.

I get 2812fps with Varget and 162gr Amax out of my 7mm-08AI. I had a batch of varget that would run faster but this lot won't without pressure. I'm also at 2.950 on oal running a AI mag.
