33 above zero. No coats, funky Micheal Jackson glove liners or ear muffins needed. I don't have a river, or an island, or a cool story like Sammo. But second day of late deer come along, and I popped a goofy fork-ed, funk-ed, [bleep]-ed up whitetail. Yesterday the game warden was out at the ranch checking out my bird operation. We jumped a whitetail buck outta a thistle patch, and he ran to the creek bottom. I joked that if I was faster, he'd be writing me a ticket for chooting from the truck with no orange on. I went looking for him after the copper left, but couldn't find him. This morning while feeding, I seen a deer flit thru the trees. I went below where I thought it'd be, and run into a couple does followed by this guy. He never gave me a real good look, but I saw mass. When I could see some body between trees, I let him have it.....

Don, now that is frikken UBER!

Really nice buck!

Insane mass and splits and forks. Character all over the place!

Think grandpa might have been a mule deer?

Dwayne was wondering about 'hanging weight' so I bought a scale.

Curious to hear what that buck of yours weighs as well.

huntsman22, Is that a muletail deer? Seriously that's a beauty and the .260 done it. What are they eating out there? Look like a deer saw out at the Rocky Montain Arsenal, and we all know what in the ground out there!

Damn nice cape wasted looks like there, but thats life.

Do something with those antlers. Don't just toss em in the barn. Too good to just toss.

thanks guys.

'swede, he may be muletail. He did have a white tail, tho... I'll show a pic. We gots both and have kilt a couple small crosses. As to the Arsenal, my sis is a photog and has pics of some absolute toads from there.....

MM, rifle is a Montana 260 running 120 BT's. I found the cup, but the core blew on thru and left a nifty exit. I'll toss a pic.

fats, I made the kydex when my leather one wore out...

Sam, I didn't bother to weigh him. Forgot there was a scale in the barn......

'ring, I'll do a euro. Still have a little cleanup to do tomorry. pic on the way....

Like the sodbuster-burning outlaw guy in lonesome dove, I was 'feeling bloody' today. In between busting the buck and other various chores, I woodsman-ized a porkypine.

[Linked Image]

Then, when that blasted bloody feeling overcame me again, I shot, bled, and hauled 3 beeves to the locker plant.....

Wtg Don, thats a stud! W/mass to spare. Also I always admire the dude who
sports the [bleep] out of a Kimmy 260 like I do. Btw I stole the idea from you many moon ago when you kilt that bull and had the pic of your rifle, paint, and rack together. It was hours later that I bought one. Made my 17th 6.5 addition to my stable. Good on ya dude.

OK, guys. Edicate me on these whitetails. This buck is a fugging 4-point, far as I'm concerned. What do I need to do, to be considered 'in the know', like all the cool kids? Count every little protruberance and call it a frigging point? Add every day since his birthday, and say neat stuff like, "He's a 5 1/2 year old"? Hell, I'd be laughed outta the sale barn if'n I told the auctioneer I was selling selling 1 year and 7 month old spayed heifers instead of just plain ol' yearlin's. Help a feller out, here.....

That's a whale of a buck, Huntsman!

Don't know what else would happen, but you quit Copenhagen & you could probably buy a ranch! At least if you go through it like most folks I know.

Love the mass on that buck...and that pistol is too cool.

Thanks for taking the time to share your hunt with us Don and congratulations - what bases on that buck! cool

I really enjoy seeing the ranch photos that you, Sam and a couple others here share too, so please continue on doing them if it's not too, too much bother.

Thanks again Don and all the best to you this winter.

Danged if I didn't see another one in the same place this morning. I grabbed the glasses and climbed the bluff and watched him bed down on the neighbors to the north. He wasn't as tall, but wider, even, and just as heavy. I'm going back up after bit and see if he's still there. Also saw 7 muledeer does on the south end.

Nice. Then it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the 6.5mm 120 NBT is roughly 50% jacket and 50% lead, give or take a bit. Fairly good for a cup/core. I found about the same when I recovered a cup from a 168gr .30cal BT a few years ago. The lead came out when it stopped against the hide.

Hey Jpro, looky what I found stuck in the spine. It looks fairly complete, so maybe the exit was caused by bone? It fits perfect in the cup. I reckon the cup tumbled out to the hide, while the lead stayed fused to the vertebrae.

Don, how far away was the buck when you shot him?

You simmer and pressure wash for the final skull clean?

He was maybe 150. I'll just soak till everything is rotten, then wirebrush it and pull what I can outta the skull and nasals with a wire hook, soak some more and hit the carwash. Then he'll soak in Dawn for a few days, brush with gasoline, dawn again, then peroxide.

Nicely done man.

A euro mount would be cool.

And never, ever, drink Crown Royal Maple and pick out buck brains and skull meat. I hear it can make a man very nauseous.....

Hell of a buck Hunts....congrats!

Have always had good luck on critters with the 120 BTs out of the .260.

You ever boil them with baking soda?
