I have a friend that has a 280 Remington. He is trying to find some brass, which can be found but is a little expensive. Can any other brass be formed into 280?...30-06, 7mm-08, 270? Or should he just pay the money and buy some? Thanks for any info.

270 can be grealy improved to a 280 fairly easy. expand to 30 caliber then reduce to 7 mm using a 280 die. The cartridge should be a tight fit. ire form.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

I think paying a little extra to have it correctly stamped and avoiding the fire-forming step makes the extra cost worthwhile. I would even rather buy factory ammo and shoot it for the brass. That's just me...

Maybe try to find some once-fired brass online?

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Just buy it online. Too many opportunities to mix cases that look very similar. I'd be OK if we were talking 30-06 to 35 Whelen, that is easy to spot. I recently ruined some 222 Mag brass because I thought it was .223 and didn't have my glasses on.

If he's not going to do a LOT of shooting, then he can buy some cheap factory corelocks and shoot them up for the brass, or drop about a buck a piece on Norma or Nosler brass in a 25ct box. IF your friend puts any value on his time, then he's just as well to do any of that as he is to form his own brass with an "off" head stamp.

I wouldn't risk forming 280brass from 270. Too easy to mix up. That is why the shoulder was moved forward on the 280 to keep it from chambering in a 270. 25-06 and 30-06 are shorter than the 280.
Buy new places like gunbroker are selling it for around $50-55 for 50. You would pay $40 for 270 brass then have to fireform it. Primer and powder would cost more than the difference. Not to mention your time.
If he can wait for Remington brass that is great. If he wants to shoot now Norma and Nosler make great brass. Unless he is really running it hot you will get 5+ loading. Spread the cost difference out of the life and it pretty much disappears.
Just my 2 cents.

Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.
