What is a good entry level Drilling? I've looked at photos and thought about it for a few years. I am thinking either 12,16 or 20 for the shot gun, the rifle something 25 caliber or larger. Ronnie

I looked at one the Mule Deer wants to sell. It is a nice 12 over 30-30 if I remember correctly. It is a Charles Daly and I think he wants $1500.00 for it. I have seen and handled it and it is a nice old gun...

No, but if you might be interested I can send some photos to your regular e-mail. But it doesn't have a scope and it isn't set up to take one. Instead the sights are flip-up rear sight on the rib, and a flip-up aperture sight on the tang. Both shoot 170-grain factory loads right at the top of the bead.

I tend to find drillings in 12ga to pretty club like even more so when you find them with beavertail forends. 16's and 20's(hard to find used) handle more like nice upland gun in the fields. Most of the prewar 16 and a lot of the 12's have 2 1/2" chambers but there is plenty of short ammo available including 16ga 2 1/2" Brenneke slugs. I load 1oz copper BB's in my 16x16x6.5x58R Suer for coyote hunting. The most common calibers are 6.5x57R, 7x57R, 7x65R, 8x57R(.318 bullet) and 9.3x72R. The first three are the most useful with commonly available bullets and loaded ammo. The 7s being more than adequate for anything in the lower 48. There are a number of postwar JP Sauer's coming out of the scandanavian countries complete with scopes for very reasonable price. I was in the Frankonia store in Nuremberg last week and they hand a number of very nice drillings at very reasonable prices, just wish it were easy to import them. My postwar 16x16x7x57R JP Sauer Nice combo guns make great hunting guns also. 12/5.6x50R Mag V.Bernardelli doing yeoman work on coyotes from the Canadian borer to the Mexican border.

Nice guns there. I'd love to own them both. There are a lot of German guns being sold, due to the new draconian gun laws in Germany. The older guns, pre and post war, are not being kept by the inheriting families. The older hunters are dying off, and new ones are not replacing them within the families. These are either being crushed by the state, or they're going to gun shops for pennies, since the costs and paperwork are prohibitive now to transfer these fine old guns. My importer is jumping through seemingly impossible hoops to get guns out of Germany and more stupid bureaucratic hurdles getting them into this country. After all, a drilling is a known terrorist choice in weapons. Europe is NUTS! Anyone who wants us to emulate them is even nuttier.

Are you a new and proud drilling shooter? If so, congratulations. That Daly is a wonderful old gun. I wish I owned it, and you had a better one.

I hope it makes it here by next weekend, but with the holidays I'm not holding my breath. It will definitely be making the trip to the deer stand. Ronnie
