I picked up a used model 70 classic in 300 Win. Will probably get a new stock but still a carry gun. If it won't shoot will probably end re-barreled as a 338.
Any recommendations on a scope? Toughness needed but not not excessively heavy. Probably no need to go more than 10-12 (9 would be enough for hunting only). Acceptable optics. I would like to keep it under $1K.

A Leupold 6x36 LR would be my choice.

1. Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 2. Zeiss 3-9x40 conquest 3. Swarovski 3-9x36 4. Burris FFII 3-9x40 with ballistic plex reticle. 5. B&L or Bushnell elite 4200 2.5-10x40 6. Nikon monarch 2.5-10x42
No particular order...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Range parameters in as how far, stand hunting or walking and what will you be shooting at?
Re read the OP and see you will be carrying it.

My 300 is one of the two rifles that I have that has a 3x9 Leupold scope. I think too high a power scopes on rifles is a big mistake.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Battue, he put a cap of 10-12 on the power range. He states, "probably no need to go more than 10-12"... If a guy can't use a 3-9 in just about any kind of hunting scenario, he needs to take up golf or sewing/knitting... Just sayin..

Shooting at deer, elk, and occasional longer range prairie dog and paper, though the latter need more than 12 power.
Hopefully heavier bullets .308 180-200 if the gun will digest them. Shots will be 400 or less if I can have anything to say about it but will practice to 600 or so.

I recently got a VX-2 3-9x40 LRD under $300 and wouldn't hesitate recommending. Great eyebox and relief, plenty bright, slim, lightweight.

Do you want exposed turrets? How about a SWFA SS 3-15?
