How much of the internals do you actually do? Meaning, do you disassemble it down to every screw and spring, and coat them? Or simply spray in the general direction?

I ask because one claimed positive of Birdsong BlackT is that they disassemble completely and start from the bottom up.

We coat a lot of shotguns that are hunted in salt water. Being fully coated is required to protect the metal as much as possible. On a Remington 1100 even the staked in shell latch is removed, coated and restaked in place. We use the same level of care for all firearms. The chamber and muzzle are plugged and the action is prepped and coated inside and out. Stripped to individual parts and everything is done separately. Screws, pins, some springs, c-clips, bolt lugs, bolt face, firing pin, cocking piece extractor, ejector plunger, etc. The lug recesses are only done directly if the barrel is removed. On revolvers and semi autos even the trigger sears are done. I don't split Remington and some other triggers for coating. They hardly work as is. Other makes the trigger parts are done. Coil springs can't be blasted very well or it changes their spring rate. We can lightly blast and then Microslick those if it is for an extreme application. Not all applicators do this. This is how we were factory trained.

Birdsong is the only product that refuses to be independently tested. What specifications they do give it is about 1/10th the coating durability of the ceramic based Cerakote.

Check out the pictures of his work. His attention to detail is second to none. He is also a pro at glass bedding as well...

Thanks. At risk of sounding like I want to make a silk-purse out of a sow's ear, I have an H&R Handi in 44 mag that I have become attached to and would like coated. This is exactly what I was looking for. smile

You are lucky too because Eddie lives in your neck of the woods. My cerakote guy lives 10 miles from me and I like giving him the business, plus he's almost as good as Eddie... Good luck with your project..

Myore on here does cerakote as well and does a great job. He moved up to your neck of the woods recently.

bigswede, here's some stuff Jeremy Smith did for me. Smiths Custom Coatings:

Graphite black plus bolt jeweling:

Midnight blue with a little oil on it:

Midnight blue without oil on it:

The midnight blue seems to be a little slicker and smoother than the graphite black. Very similar in color though..

Which color Cerakote exactly matches the matte black color of a Leupie scope, or a little darker black even like a Talley Lightweight ring?

Graphite black is probably your best bet on that DD...

He charges $150.00 for a complete barreled action. He also cerakoted a couple extra parts for me free of charge. I have his information if you want it. Here's his facebook, you can look at some pictures of the work he's done:

Midnight blue he just did for me. He also did the bolt jeweling:

I would like to get this done to my CZ 550. Really like the looks of that jeweled bolt with the extractor being coated, offsets the rig a bit. Is there a color that closely matches the target gray Ruger uses on their target model rifles? Still doing a bit of research on colors and looking at different color schemes.

Good question. I just answered your PM a bit ago. I also really like the looks of the bolt jeweling and cerakote. Gives it a good contrast..I wish I could help with some better pictures, but my camera really doesn't do these colors/workmanship any justice. I can tell you that the sniper grey is darker than the ruger target grey used on the m77 mkII VT rifles. Tungsten grey might be an almost perfect match. I just took some pictures of my sniper grey rifle next to the ruger m77 mkII varmint rifle and the sniper grey is definitely a shade darker if that helps...

Ok maybe Sniper Grey is along the lines of what I am interested in, really like the darker greys. Have a PM to Smiths and will see if he can offer up some sample pics as well.

This is about the best I can do right now. In person the color difference doesn't look as extreme as in the pic:

Karl Kampfeld also does some amazing work. He's pretty well known in the gun business. Excellent photos too!!.. What are his prices?
