A friend of mine has been sectioning bullets for a long time, recently he took a look at a Scenar for me. Here is a short sample of some for comparison:

[Linked Image]

L to R- Scenar .308 155gr, Hornady (old style) .284 154gr, Nosler older PT .284 175gr, Bitter Root .308 180gr, Trophy Bonded .308 200gr, Barnes .338 225gr, Sierra .338 250gr, Nosler PT .338 250gr, Nosler PT .375 270gr, Nosler PT .375 300gr, Bitter Root .375 300gr, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw .45 400gr Trophy Bonded Solid .45 500gr.

Closer pic of the Scenar. Any idea if the flutes on the interior jacket serve a particular purpose and seeing how well they work on broadside shots-what about a bad angle through a fair amount of bone?

What's with those partial partitions on the two Noslers in the middle?

The Bitter Root .375/300gr. must be an old one with the double jacket. The Noslers with the hole in the partition are the old ones turned on a screw machine and usually with a releaf groove.

I would like to see the Scenar compared to the Sierra and Berger. The Sierra in .375 has a fairly heavy jacket.

You are right, old Partitions and Bitter Root. No particular method in choosing those. The Barnes is an early X bullet and the sectioning on it (with the step) doesn't show the cavity well-a lot of it was cut away.

The old Partitions were turned out on a screw machine-it really shows on the jacket nose.

Not yet, I think he has a couple that he'll do soon. I'll post pics when I get them.

Wouldn't you think that performance on game would be more revealing? Based on the photo, the 155 doesn't look all that impressive. Based on actual reports of how it kills elk, it would seem to be very good.

I'm just looking for some info and sharing what I know. I like how the Scenars shoot and they do seem to do a surprisingly good job of killing game. Hoping some folks with the experience chip in.

A long time ago Peters made a hunting bullet that was called the "Protected Expanding Point" which essentially much like that Scenar. To see proof go to http://rtgammo.com/ and then select the 20 rd boxes -rifle cal
look at the first box of Peter's ".30 Gov't Model 1906" ammo in the list.

I think I remember seeing a photo of a sectioned bullet in a very old Outdoor Life magazine. It didn't have boattail though. I can't find it on google.

It would interesting know what alloy of the Scenar lead core is, the jacket thickness and its alloy and how that compares to other "target" bullets that perhaps don't penetrate as well.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the photos. It's interesting to see how they're constructed. But photos don't tell the whole story, just as ballistic tables don't either.

Just search for the "deceased via scenar" thread. Lots of info there.

Had no idea some partitions had an open type web...I've never seen that. Was that old style or something else?

I still have some of the old screw machine Partitions. They don't look as nice as the new Partitions, but they still work.
