Just bought a Vanguard in 270 Win. Question is most of my shots at whitetails will be 150yds. or less. I'm thinking of using 150g loads, my reason for this thinking is a slower bullet at close range will equal less meat damage. Am I right? One piece that I hunt I shoulder shoot them to keep them from going on to property that I don't have permission to be on.
So what do you 270 guys use that hunt similar conditions?

I would not enter into that sort of agreement with my rifle without asking her what she thinks. She may like 130gr better.

Shoot them behind the shoulder with the 130 grain bullet for quick kills and the only meat you'll damage is lung. If you hit them fairly high and within six to eight inches of the spine they'll drop in their tracks and bleed out internally right on the spot. Saves you the trouble of tracking and finding them.
That's what the .270 can do.
We buy the .270 because we want maximum shocking power due to massive damage to the animal.
On small southern deer that means the 130 grain bullet. I'd also spend a little more and use a premium bullet that will give more reliable performance at all ranges.
I've hit small deer in the shoulder with a 150 grain (by accident) and you still pretty much throw away that shoulder.
Hit behind the shoulder and all will be well.

Not much that won't work. If 150's give you the warm and fuzzy (and shoot how you want) go for it.
At least you didn't throw in the "but maybe I'll shoot something at 800 yards and might hunt out west" caveat.

I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

But I have fixed, accuraized, and messed around with a bunch of 270 win chambered guns for myself and others. The most accurate factory loads I' messed with lately are th Federal Premium line, Federal Fusion, Hornady Custom, and Hornady Whitetail. Oddly enough, all the 270s I've messed with seem to like 130 grain the best most of the time. I recently diagnosed a Howa for a friend that wouldn't group. In the end it shot 130 Fusions into an inch and Hornady Whitetail 130 into .55".

This is what I'd try first as well in 130 & 150 grain and let your rifle tell you what it likes best. Aim for the ribs and don't worry about meat damage.

I helped sight in a few vanguards and each seemed to prefer the 150's. I agree with your assessment.
I reload for my CZ and liked the results with the 150's better. I just now switched to Sierras and am going with modest loads in the 140 Gameking.

I'd buy 3 or 4 different boxes of ammo that is commonly available in your area to see what shoots best in your rifle. Once you figure out what your rifle likes, go back and buy whatever is left on the shelf.

Have killed a lot of deer with a 130 gr Core-Lokt with a shot in the ribs behind the shoulder none went anywhere after being shot. Deer at <150 yards doesn't take anything special.

I'd stick with 130's as they seem to put deer down faster.

Federal Fusion turned in the tightest group for me when trying to find factory ammo. Hornady Superformance turned in 3" groups @ 100. YMMV

P.S. You mentioned minimum meat lost. I've noticed that mono-metals me and my family used to hunt with have the least amount of blood shot meat. There is no scientific test or measurement, just our personal experience. Also, I have never purchased a mono-metal factory load. They usually fetch a premium price. Its less expensive to reload those rounds.

Not that it'll matter at 150 yards, but don't believe the box numbers. I clocked a handful of 130 CoreLokts that averaged 2,872. Reason #2 I love my 260

Well I think i'll pickup 3 boxes of varies 130g mentioned and 3 boxes of various 150g and see what it likes.
Weatherby sends a target with the rifle, they shot 130g, 3 shot group @ 100yds., it was a 1" group.
If indeed that rifle did shoot that group, that might be a tell tale right there!
Thank-you for the input fellas!
