I rented Munich last night and came away fairly impressed. It's got an odd tone that I can't really explain, other than dark and gritty. Given the subject matter, I guess that's appropriate. Spielberg directed it, and while I haven't seen Schindler's List (and won't) I have a feeling it may be similar in some ways. I liked the suspense, and thought the movie connected the audience to the emotions of the main character pretty well. The '70s look was captured very well, and I'd give it two thumbs up as a "period piece." Watching it right before bedtime was a bit of a mistake, but I hate to waste daylight. It's about 2.75hrs IIRC, but the time is well used to fully take the audience on the intended journey.

Schindler's List is considerably darker and grittier. May be content or may be the fact its black and white.

I liked Munich. I dunno how factual it is but I enjoyed it for the movie's sake.

Schindler's List was an outstanding movie any way you slice it. Municch is a good movie, not a great movie, but it's one that I would recommend to most anyone. I enjoyed it and found it to be "generally" historically accurate.

Schindler's List should be required viewing in HS History IMO. I watch the movie regularly - mostly when I feel like I have it bad - I can see just what real courage is.

It came out when I was in HS - my German club went to see it.

Weird - as we waited outside the movie - usuall joking and talking going on amongst everyone waiting. When the people came out of the movie and passed us -- no normal talking and quite a few tears. After we saw it - was the same for us.

That movie has the power to change people and it did affect me and others in a meaningful way.

Continuing along the side track -

Sometimes a certain scene or image in a movie affects you deeply and stays with you.

That scene where the boy is looking for a place to hide and jumps in the absolute filth of the latrine, only to find others already there...that one got to me.

The other bit that makes me think is when the women in the barracks are discussing rumors of death camps, and one of them says "oh, surely they wouldn't do that". Here they are, in a labor camp, housed in primitive conditions, being used for random target practice or executed on a whim, and they still hold strong to their belief that their fellow humans couldn't sink that low.

Will have to rent Munich soon, I understand that the story is not so much about the Israeli's quest for revenge, but more about what that quest, even if fully believed in, can do to one's soul.

Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery.
Hit the target, all else is twaddle!

Yeah , that barracks scene got me too. Plus when Oskar realizes he could have sold his pin, car or coat to get more workers out. I could not imagine that feeling.

I guess I "play along" too well with a lot of movies, and really get absorbed into them. I can pretty well guarantee that S. List is too much for me to handle personally. I'd be left at the end of the movie wanting to cut some Nazi throats, with nowhere to relieve the desire. Blood and gore doesn't bother me a bit. Unspeakable historical acts perpetrated on an undeserving population makes my blood boil however-------especially when written and directed realistically. As superb as S. List must be, I'm OK w/o ever watching it.

After seeing that movie - was the first time in my life where I was ashamed to be German. And we came here in the lte 19th century.

Yeah, I know what you mean. There are some good Krauts though too. The Nazis were in a class by themselves, and once they got established and in power, there wasn't much the good Germans could do except on a small individual level. A lot of them prolly also "chose" to ignore the truth. I wasn't there, so I'm just guessing.

There is a very large percentage of German blood in my family tree as well. We brag up the Scottish portion the most though.

Quick German joke from a German friend of mine:
"You can tell a German from two blocks away, but once you get to him, you can't tell him anything."

OK, back to the movie reviews.

There were also some bad krauts, and they werent all on the other side of the pond. My great grandmother (yes, she was a old coot during the war) was a card carrying member of the American Nazi party. Even after the news came out about the death camps, she was totally cool with that. Many years later, I was born and after a while word got out that my father was a Jew.

I was never allowed inside her home. When we visited, I had to wait outside on the steps I cant recall a single word she ever said to me.

That kind of hate, I just dont understandBut its what fueled the Nazis.
