I came across a savage 99 f 300 savage for sale locally. It has the the lever safety, jeweled bolt, but a plastic butt pad. Is this correct? I don't have the serial number. It's a thin black plastic one. That looks identical to the metal ones I thought came on these. What's the going rate for these now adays? Thank you

I believe the very early rifles could have a black hard rubber pad. Under 250000 serial number. If it is truly an F it would have an English stock, integrated front sight, takedown, and if in good shape worth 6 to 8 hundred. IMO. It will also be stamped 1899 on the receiver. You are most likely looking at a modern f with the jeweled bolt solid frame pistol grip and an aftermarket butt pad as I do not believe plastic or rubber was standard issue.

Damn, what should I do about my 950,xxx 99F in 308 Winchester?

Are you talking about a 1950s F with a barrel boss or a pre-war takedown F? It sounds like the former which should have a metal butt plate. If it's plastic then make sure that someone didn't use it to replace a kick pad.

1955-70 F's were steel butt plates. 1970 - ? were aluminum. GW

None of the 99F's were catalogued with hard rubber buttplates. On the 1899H's or as an option on other early rifles.
