I just received a 392gr hollow base mold from MiHec for my Winchester 1886 45-90 new build replica.
The mold has 2 lube grooves
My question is with the lube grooves do I need to paper patch with BP or just push it into the case as I do the smokeless slugs
I have never loaded up BP in a cartridge.
And it is my understanding that I need to use dead soft pure lead for the slugs. No alloy.
Any advise.

Start at the beginning.

What diameter is that bullet? If it's 458 you should be good to go. Use a good blackpowder bullet lube. Paper patch bullets are slick sided and usually about .006 or more smaller than the bore measurement before being patched. Pure lead not necessarily the way to go, best bet is 20-1 or 16-1 alloy. Not a lot of voodoo in loading blackpowder cartridges, just keep the bullet base and the powder in "firm" contact.
the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to. www.historicshooting.com

The diameter should be .462 and I will size it down to .460. At least that was my thought.
I have not cast any of them up yet to see what they come out to be.
