Me, I love the 7mm-08. Shot a similar cartridge (just a few degrees different shoulder angle) for years in a Wichita Silhouette Pistol and never missed a critter out to 200 meters.
I'd build one on a new bare Remington action that had been blueprinted by Pacific Tool and Gauge, with a Pac-Nor Super Match barrel with 1:9" twist polygonal rifling, in my favorite contour, cut to 24", then stuffed into a Bell and Carlson Medalist stock with the aluminum bedding block. That would be a great start, but I already have the action, with swap barrels, so I'd just have to order the barrel with the Rem-Nut and be in business.

My son has a .284 built on a short action Winchester model 70 FWT with an eight twist Pac Nor barrel.
A great build for the Elk/Moose hunter and it sure dumps the whitetails. His bullet for the whitetail is the 120g Nosler Ballistic Tip. The Winchester magazine easily accommodates the longer .284 case and allows the bullet to be set out where it should be. Great build, smooth feeding, accurate, hunt anything, lots of horsepower. He loves it.

Good round, but again, brass is problematic. Midway shows it as "seasonal run, unavailable" from WW only and Grafs doesn't even list that.
.280 brass is listed by Midway with 5 sources, 2 of which are available, as well as Nosler AI brass.
With things being what they are these days, any time I start to get the itch, I check on how hard it will be to feed whatever it is I'm lusting after.

He also tried some 6.5X284 brass (plentiful)and found it to worked just fine. The 7mm bullets slide in as if they were made for it. Great build. Easy to reload, does the job. Jim

We shoot 7mm-08, 7mm-08ai, 284 win and 7mm wsm. Like 'em all, a lot. The 7mm-08ai is my fave and is a very efficient cartridge. 2950+ fps with 140 gr bullets, 3200+ fps with 120 gr TTSX or NBT. That extra 50-75 fps over a std 7-08 is just enough to notice. The 284 win is built on a Model 70 SA, and works and feeds great. If building one on a Rem 700 SA, I'd definitely recommend a Wyatt's Box Extender.

Actually, I was responding to the guy talking about running a .284 with heavy bullets in a long action. In a SA, it's a fine choice. A standard- length round makes more sense to me in a LA. The OP didn't express a preference.

.284 is my favorite round! If you reload or have many boxes of Ammo. Go for the .284. It's making a strong comeback, thanks to Melvin Forbes. That's just a fact!
Good luck on your choice! I have both rounds in these calibers and the .284 outperforms the 7-08 in my rifles.

You tell 'em DLS. And while we're on the subject, there is no reason [that] anyone who reloads cannot SAFELY load a little more stouter for the MODERN rifles in 7X57. The data found in the manuals and in factory ammo is loaded to the lower pressures in deference to the older rifles and weaker '95 MAUSER actions. Can't really blame them, though, what with the litigious mindset of some people, but there is no reason not to be able to safely load the 7X57 a little hotter than it is today in newer, stronger actions. Depends on the action you have. Short action, 7/08 if only obviously.
The 7x57 belongs in the correct Mauser, as originally intended. Agreed, those actions and magazines were designed for that case length and taper. 7-08 fits SA's great, but the 7x57 needs the IL magazine and the matching rails to feed perfectly. For a build, the 7x57 AI in a Forbes/NULA/CLR 20 is very tempting however. ;-)

Go with the 7 SAUM. It's a 280 AI-Short. Sound advice. Can't imagine building a .284 on a short action with the SAUM around. Though in most instances, the 7mm-08 (AI or not) would be better IMO. Never a 7x57. It was great 100 years ago, but there are significantly better choices today....... All This ^^ If you are going to do the 7 SAUM start with a Montana 99, or a Win SA WSM action with their generous IL magazine length. Then throat it accordingly.

At least it did this evening...again.

Beautiful RevMike,
We're re-barreling a Mauser that won't extract cleanly, (Chamber pitted and nasty) got a barrel blank, going to be a 275 Rigby (Sooooo much better than the old 7X57) !!! Original Mauser, may even build a 416 as a big brother!
Yes, I know 275 Rigby is another name for the 7mm Mauser.....

Thanks. That is a Montana 1999 SA, which is actually intermediate. It fits that old obsolete .275 just fine.

Thinking of building a 284 on a Stiller Predator action with HS DBM. Will this work good with the length of the .284. I ail ready have 7-08.

7x57
It has more powder capacity than the 7-08.

Elk:
You know, that's what I was thinking. All things being equal, if the choice is between a 7x57 and 7-08, and if factory ammunition isn't an issue, I'm wondering why not just go with the 7x57 since it can be stoked beyond the 7-08. Yeah, it's old, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's obsolete. Shoot, even the old .416 Rigby is making a comeback as people are realizing that it still does exactly what it was designed to do. To each his own, but I'm just not seeing the advantage of the 7-08 over the 7x57, especially when you can get a new action that that fits it perfectly.
Not trying to argue; just not exactly getting it.

Rev,in all honesty, people make a big deal about action length and to me it's a useless argument. Do believe the bullet does the killing, not action length. Rev,I don't get it either, guess we are dinosaurs.
