A friend of mine has had a 99 in .300 for many years. He used to have a 4x scope but for some reason changed to some variable which he does not like. He wants to put another 4x scope, mount and rings on it and is asking me about my recommendations. I'm NOT a 99 guy, but I told him to put on a set of simple old style weaver 2 piece mounts with rings and a Leupold 4x. He's not into nostalgia: just wants good functional set-up with good eye relief. Did I direct him wrong and if so, what would be a better mount/rings combination for his old 99 using a 4x scope. Thanks for your help.

A 4x Leupold is just about perfect for everything. With a 99, that 4x is perfect.

For me, my scope choices are usually dictated by 2 things.. the age of the rifle I am putting the scope on, and, what am I going to use the rifle for?

But, having said that, RAS gives sound advice. It's hard to beat a fixed 4x for all around use.

I just went the other direction, I replaced an older 4X with a Leupold VX2 2-7. There's a thread in the optics section about it.

I used the same Weaver rings that have been on the rifle since the early 80's. I had a set of Leupold STD mounts on it for a while but they wouldn't stay tight. Plus the one piece base leaves less room for loading. To me that is an important factor with cold fingers and gloves. So the Leupold mounts came off and the Weavers went on.

You directed him right in both scope and mount.

Can't go wrong with RAS's thoughts. Have a few setup that way myself and they work great.
