The rifle with the 2XXXXX serial number is a Model "F" take down with the 410 barrel and the later serial number [373XXX] appears to be an early "EG" without checkering. The first rifle is from the early 1920s the second from the mid to late 1930s. Better dates can be obtained from websites like: http://www.savage99.com/index.phpI'll let you enjoy the process of discovery. There is a lot of information at that site. If you insured the lot for around $1200- $1500 you would be in the ball park. The first rifle is a "shooter" because it was drilled and tapped for a scope. The second rifle has a little more value because of its original condition. The 410 barrel sell from $300-500 depending on condition. Just an opinion worth exacting what you paid for it.

Cmon Bert, dig out the Murrays, can't be a model B with no cresent buttplate, it's an early F.

Welcome to the campfire, dragnracer1. Sorry to hear about your dad.
A bit more background on the models..
The 99F was actually first introduced as the featherweight model 1899H in 1905. When Savage changed the model names to 99 in 1921 the 1899H became the 99E (solid frame) and 99F (takedown). Don't be surprised if there is a stamp saying Savafe Model 1899 on it, Savage continued that stamp for quite a while in the 20's. It's still a model 99F. The 99F was in production up to 1941, I think.
The 99EG was introduced in 1935, and continued to be made up to 1959. It had checkering added at sn 385,000'ish, so you won't see too many uncheckered EGs compared to checkered. Probably the most common model encountered.
Savage 410 barrels were added as an accessory sometime in the 1910's and continued up through the 1930's. Oddly enough, the 410 barrel value probably isn't that much lower than either of your rifles' values.
The 99F has been drilled and tapped for scope bases, as mentioned, plus the sling swivels are after market. The 99EG looks nice, if a bit gray from being carried.

first one without checkering is a Mod EG made roughly 1937,model started 1935 ,checkered in 1940 , second one is a Mod F made approx 1925,quite often came as a set in a case, yours having been drilled and tapped aftermarket and with the stock repairs has little or no collector value but with the 410 barrel is very diserable and that barrel is worth a fare bit of money. norm

The 410 brl has been modified so that the forearm will lock in place like on the rifle brl. The original setup used a screw on the brl that was to contact the very end of the forearm with a pressure fit.

That was not the standard way and I don't think we have any proof that Savage would supply the barrel in that form. No matter how many photos you have on file you never have the right one. Will someone please post a photo of the factory 410 screw attachment? I think your modified barrel is one of the few none factory changes that is accepted by most as being a better idea than the original.

But it's not "better". <IMO> A barrel done in this fashion is "almost certainly" (how's that for terminology) not going to interchange from one gun to the next. The chances of it indexing on a different gun are slim to none.

Fug has at least one 410 barrel that is almost surely factory and has the hook attachment... but it's much later and a serious special order gun. Click on this picture to see the full sized one and you can see the standard attachment with the screw.

what "form" are u speaking of ???? im a little confused , none of my pics show the 410 barrel attached to the rifle the barrel threads onto the gun the same way as my 300 barrell and the latching tab is the same on both barrels for atttaching the forend ( this all on my teardown )

dragnracer1, if you look at the cased set, you can see a round sleeve like thing with a screw in it on the 410 barrel. That was the original way of mounting the barrel. If you click on the picture of the boxed set it will blow up to full screen. Look close at the forearm, it looks like there is a crack in it. I believe that was one of the problems of the original set up, it was hard on the forearm. The lug on your barrel that snaps in like the rifle barrel is a modification, Joe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

That crack could be from all the Arctic expeditions that rifle went on.
