Some really incredible photos. It is amazing to me that the Civil War to most of us is comparable to ancient history (OK, there are some here that may not fit that category grin ) yet here are pictures of veterans that our parents may have known and certainly our Grandparents may have known.

I recall as a small child in the late 40's seeing an old man in our town who was a Civil War vet who had been here since the 1880's. He lived in an old hotel here and I would see him huddled under his blanket peacefully sleeping in his overstuffed chair when my dad would take me to the adjoining barber shop.

The older part of our cemetery has many GAR headstones.

I thought I knew a lot about the Civil War.

I was wrong.

Very interesting stuff. It is amazing to see pictures of those who fought against each other embrace one another as fellow men when there are those who didn't and can't (or won't).

When I was growing up, we still had an abundance of WWI veterans around. Our neighbor was one, and I always found him fascinating. Now we are to the point of rapidly losing the last of our WWII veterans. As was referenced in the pictures, pages are being turned that can never be turned back.

Thanks for posting this. My father's great great grandfather served in the GAR and is buried in my hometown. The GAR insignia is engraved on his cemetery marker.

My dad attended the last reunion of the Blue and Grey at Gettsburg in 1938.

Had a press pass so went most everywhere.

There was a Half Dollar minted for the event and sold for $1.95?

It was to raise money for the food and shelter for the veterans at the event.

great stuff Pugs, thanks.

My own Great Granddad served the entire war with the 46th Georgia Infantry. He died in 1923.

Extraordinary! In 1978 while I was still a Tank Commander, we had a Memorial Day open house and lotsa folks came to get inside out tanks. I had the Privilege of meeting a Spanish-American War veteran who was resident at our local V.A. Hospital. He was very old, confined to a wheelchair. I asked for and got the Honor of pushing him to anywhere he wanted to go that afternoon. Very humbling experience.

I am named after my Great, or Great-Great Uncle Jefferson (1st name) who fought and died in the Civil War. My family's roots are heavily tied to the men and women of that era.
