BTW, have you used or seen those gold IBs used much on live stuff, and if so, how did they seem to work?

They work wonderful in both the 416 and the 458 and I hoard the ones I still have and carry a handful for the times I need to wrinkle a boar out of the pucker brush

Cool. I've tested them fairly and seen them used a time or two. Other than being a bit 'hard/brittle' in the jacket perhaps, they seem like fine bullets for things which don't have tough African hides.

Phil,

What's the monster on the right, 585 Nyati or 600 OK?

One of these days I need to finish my 500 Jeffery.

600 OK with a 900 gr Woodleigh. that one came out perfect but most tended to come apart. The 570 gr .509 TSX is what most of them come out looking like. That is if they don't exit.

I have a couple boxes of the 570 coated X bullets for the Jefferey.

I figure they should do the trick somewhere between 2200-2400 fps at the muzzle.

But I must admit when my starting load of 100 gr RL 15 with the 600 gr cast was clocking 2200 fps, my motivation for the project started to dwindle and any thoughts of building a 600 overkill were put to rest.

Waterrat, no doubt the border collie is a big help. Will lead the wounded bear right to you smile.

Waterrat's "pup" is a lot like him, it may not look like much on the hoof but you would be foolish to under rate either of them.

I shoot everything from Hornady 350 gr @ 2300fps (accuracy load) to 520gr "Government Bullets" intended for the Sharps @ 1850fps. The WW factory 500 & 510 gr ammo shoots OK, but not good as my handloads.

I love the caliber. Get a stock that fits you and you'll never be sorry you bought one.

I know you've done it before, but you need to post a pic of this rifle. She's a real beauty. FWIW, I thought the recoil was about right, and none too much for the payload.

Pak,,Tar is his name and he's a Karelian Bear Dog doing what he was breed to do!

The Lab is Dubber,, he wasn't doing what he wanted to be doing was a great help all the same.

You can trail wounded game with a dog in Alaska.

It would be pretty low of me not give most of the tracking credit to my wife and everything partner!! She trains the KBD dogs ( we have 2) and is the best hunter I know,, her bear and one of her wolve's![Linked Image][Linked Image]

I know this is a 458 thread but she has slayed a bunch of brown bears and moose with her 300 Savage loaded with 165NP at 2500fps.

I once had a great bear pointer. He was a lousy hunting dog otherwise, skipping right past even ptarmigan flopping their last flutters in the snow. But he would get real quiet and point bears when they came around, often well before we could see them. The trouble with that approach is obvious, but at least he wasn't bringing them in tow.

Waterrat, Dubbers' nephew Kobuk is sitting here chewing on a moose bone as I write this. He's equally worthless on bears as Dubber but man do the birds fear him!

Well tonight I just got through shooting it from the bench. The 350 grs are not to bad the 400's were interesting but the 500 gr. bullets were somewhat unpleasant. Up on my feet they are not to bad. The last to be fired were the 500's and the rifle literally lifted itself out of my 30lb. range bag, that was a first for me. I was trying to sight in my fixed 4x33 leupold scope. For some reason it shoots 4 inches low at 25 yds at full elevation on the scope, and the front base has a pop can shim under it ( from the previous owner). I have happily used this scope for 15 yrs. with no problems. The bases are weaver and the rings are 4x4 weaver rings. Not sure what to do to fix this.
