My first Adirondack Turkey hunt. So my Brother in law invites me up to the Dacks to turkey hunt yesterday. At 6:15 or so he calls in the 8" bearded Tom . One hour later he said to me "I'll call you dance". What I thought was a square dance ended up to be a Turkey Trot. -- 20 ga. # 7 Fed Heavyweights --- 11 1/2" beard 1 1/8 spur-------------- Web

Web - SHHHHHH!
They say everything happens for a reason. For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Nice birds, and those ADK birds are way more skittish than down state corn row scratchers. Your B-i-l must be a good caller!

OOOOH ! I must have gotten turned around in my 66 years. I'm not really sure where I was in Upstate. I have heard not many people hunt turkeys in the Dacks because there ain't no turkeys there. People close to me tell me I'm starting to wander in my mind . Sorry for the wrong information. Web

Yes that's a very thick heavy beard. I showed to a fellow turkey hunter that has well over 100 toms to his collection. He said that he has never seen one as thick as that. -- My hand help scale was screwed up --- That Tom weighed 15 lbs 14 oz. -- I know he was at least 20 lbs. Thanks Web

And the DEC tells us that the turkey population is so low that they cut the limit in half! I had more birds inside shotgun range opening morning than I have ever seen in any TWO prior years!

Mssgn--- I have questioned DEC decisions many times in the past. Years ago they wanted to increase the Doe permits in the area where I hunt. Between myself and fellow hunters we had spent hundreds of hours in the woods and had a good handle on the deer . Very low deer sightings. The DEC biologist told me that the deer are there and because of hunting pressure the deer are getting smarter and are harder to hunt. My answer " Yea your right , so smart they have figured out how not to leave tracks in the snow " ---- Web

sscalls- New England Firearms 3 1/2 " 12 ga. that I sent the receiver back to H&R ( they bought out NEF ) to get both a 12 ga. with a screw in choke and a 20 ga. tube that's on it now. I'm sold on 20ga for turkey. 40+ yds. I went to the store where I bought the gun and told the clerk never sell one of these 12 ga. 3 1/2" to a young hunter. It can pick you up and set you back. Web

wldthg, I hear ya on the settin' you back part! haha. I hunt with a Charles Daly youth 20ga that weighs only 5.5 pounds and it kicks like a 12 ga. Got a little rossi 5 pounder 20 that will get you in the nose if not careful. lol I shoot hevi 13 7s in the daly, and it's good at 40 plus yards any day. I like the stock on your NEF.

And the DEC tells us that the turkey population is so low that they cut the limit in half! I had more birds inside shotgun range opening morning than I have ever seen in any TWO prior years! Same here. I see turkeys every time I get off the paved road here in Delaware County! Maybe the DEC was predicting higher than normal winter kill due to 2 rough winters in a row? They said the deer took a beating too but everyone I know who applied in 4O got a doe permit. Go figure. Nice birds wldthg!

Wow! Exceptional birds!
In the Adirondacks - Oswegatchie, Star Lake, Cranberry Lake area sure has a decent flock of birds.
