My new to me Winchester 1886 Limited edition 1 of 500 45/90 I just acquired from eh76. Keith made me a deal I couldn't refuse throwing in a bunch of factory loads,NIB Lyman dies and a few green boxes Marked Jim Martin..who the heck is that guy? Thanks Keith you know it will go afield after critters. Well guess since I have the Shiloh 45/110 and the '86 Win 45/90 the next one will be a 45/70.. SWEET! Who is that Jim Martin guy? Ed

No it isn't D&T but the same Jim Martin fella furnished this Buff Arms long staff barrel sight... Think it's a Red River sight.

Nice boomstick Woody, are the newer 45-90's twisted tight enough to stabilize 500+ grain bullets?
If so that 500 gr Jerry Dean flat nosed greaser would be the do all end all for any N.A. critter in that rifle.

Congrats, Woody . . . welcome to the "big bore lever gun club". You do realize that 45-90 shot from that '86 "light rifle" will thump you more than your 45-110 in your Sharps, right? ET and Keith sure have a knack for stirring the pot, don't they? I had my own 'pot stirrers' when I first got into the 44-XX and 45-XX BPCR game. I thank them every time I look at the rifles. Fun, ain't it? . . .

Thanks pard the twist/OAL would be questionable for 500 gr bullets as this Miroku Winchester is twisted 1:20 same as their 45/70 offering. I've done some homework on other forums where guys say they have stabilized bullets up to around 450. RCBS makes a 405 that casts heavy to about 425 which apparently shoots well and stabilizes in this new '86. I contacted Tom at Accurate molds and inquired about cutting me a custom 465 FN which will come in several thousands below OAL and should feed OK.. but first I'll load a few of my PH Lyman 457121's which weigh 475 respectfully, crimp over the last band for OAL and see if they stabilize. Half the fun of owning these guns is playing Dr Frankenstein in your own labooritory...

Fun, ain't it? . . . Thanks Nick it's a beauty in all respects and a tribute to our Japanese friends for outstanding workmanship as with their Hiwalls. I anticipate a little thumping but I'm not recoil shy never have been. My BP intellect although still on the modest side tells me to keep the mag fully stoked at all times for the extra weight.

The 457121 will definitely stabilize. They do just fine in my 20 twist guns, and they cycle through my 45-70 Marlin 1985 Cowboy like they are greased. No need to buy another mold. You have the best there is now.

Lately I've been shooting some of Buffalo Arms' 425gr .459 dia flat points, and they shoot reasonably well in both of my .45-90's. And I expect would kill about anything on this continent.

Bill if you say it shoots that's Ok by me.I don't need to knock T-Rex out of his sneakers but always have preferred the heavy end of the bullet spectrum. Will be loading the 121 this week for a range test if it ever stops raining!

Jerry I think this would be a great bear rifle especially with the extra firepower of its 6 round mag at ones disposal.Pretty sure it could stop a charging armadillo...
