I always had a fondness for Johnny Horton too, especially this one. Miss Marcie miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

That is a good way to put it, BeanMan. It ought to be a big long table for the greats.
On the female side, I'd definitely have to give Patsy, Tammy and Loretta at seat. Also, Kitty Wells.

Strait, Possum, Cash, Haggard, Hank Sr., Waylon, Hank Jr., good to go with any of them.
Gotta give some credit to my favorite cowboy singer, too. Chris LeDoux. That dude could bring it, and he lived it (didn't just sing about what someone else had done).

America needs to understand that our troops are not 'disposable'. Each represents a family; Fathers, Mothers, Sons, Daughters, Cousins, Uncles, Aunts... Our Citizens are our most valuable treasure; we waste far too many.

I've been drinkin. A lot. So I'm throwing this down as fact.
George Jones.
Having seen him in concert a few times many years ago, he is an arrogant whiny drunk prick.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

Can't get past the personality, if you are an azz, I have no need for you. Life is too short, even if you can sing. Whoop de doo...

They didn't call him No Show for nothin. He really became a great showman after he quit drinking. But his music probably wouldn't have been what it was without the life he lived.
To that end, I didn't say greatest man. Just country singer. Lots of performers I love that are probably evil little chits. Or dope smoking tax evading liberals who make great country music

Marty Robbins definitely gets a seat at the table, as does Jim Reeves, like Shrapnel suggested.
I'll also go ahead and designate a chair for Lefty Frizzell, and Dolly Parton.

If you consider the whole package - writing, singing, and picking - and stay with the "country" definition, it's gotta be Haggard.

I would have to say that Conway Twitty would be #1.
These three may not be first but I am very partial to John Anderson, Ricky Skaggs, and Dolly Parton.

Well, an 81 year old Mom just caught me not doing anything. Said "oh good, you're already up, I'll be right back."
I believe this will be the last post for the day. Haha

There ain't one best. It's all a matter of opinion, and that's subject to change. That's the real beauty of it imo. It seems that the same names always get top billing in these threads, and rightfully so to a point. But it's always good see a few folks who are willing to dig a little deeper. Some of the best there ever was is laying dormant in the cracks and crevices for anybody that willing to go lookin for it. Much of which will never garner mention in these threads. Hank Locklin is just one that comes to mind.
