Does anyone have load data for this combination? I have an 1895M that I'm loading for the first time.

Also any input on crimping would be appreciated as I've never crimped any of my loads and I believe I have to on this one.

Can't help you on loads, but I imagine it's going to thump on both ends..

I used the Lee Factory Crimp die with very good results on my .444 marlin flavored M94. Didn't need to crimp into a cannelure like a roll crimp.

The factory Hornady 325gr Leverevolution Thump pretty good...hoping I can tame it a bit.

You didn't buy it to be an easy shooter, did ya?

If you want an easy shooter, get one in .45LC or .357/38spc. and blast away all day.

This is for the old XFN that they told everyone to use as data as they had not ran the new TSX yet..They probably have by now,I would only assume.

Thanks. I'm going with IMR 4227 .......should get me to 2000-2100FPS.

I went with RL-7 knowing that RL-7 and AA-2230 are the kings of velocity/pressure in the 45-70 and went only to slightly over 2000 fps(Guide Gun) with the XFN and found 1975 gave much better accuracy..

There is also a new powder out these days RL-10X that sometimes beats RL-7 by a narrow margin,especially in the lower weight bullets.It works extremely well with bullets like the 300 Nosler.A friend of mine tested it with a 425 and 525 grain cast and it held it's own pressure wise with the old standby,RL-7.

The newer Barnes manual maxes out with 50.0 grain of V-N130, AA 1680, and RL-7. It goes 49.0 with H4198. Those are all maximums with the 300 TSX FN and 300 O.

I figured with the new grooved TSX they would go somewhat higher in charge and velocity..There data is right on 42,000 PSI so I wouldn't go much if any over there listed velocities in said barrel length...

Ty from Barnes sent me an Email that I just found today that states best accuracy with IMR 4227 So I'm going to go with that. The rifle loves the Hornady factory 325s as in a big hole 3 shot group at 100 with a 4x scope. The only issue I have is my first deer with that round wasn't found for 3 days and the shot was a good heart lung at about 80 yards.

I shoot TSXs or TTSXs in every other rifle I own and trust them without question. This was my last rifle using factory ammo so I needed to rectify that anyway.

BTW....I chrono'd the Hornadys at 2070fps....not 2200 as stated in their data....of course they probably tested with the long barrel.

Ron, the speeds they show (shot from a 24" Wiseman barrel) were 2203 with RL-7, 2268 with H4198, 2234 with AA 1680, and 2094 with IMR 4227. They went 41.5, max, with 4227. The other speeds are with the max loads I previously posted.

Will TSX's open up at those velocities. Cast bullets are the way to go. IMO

Yes they will..They have a huge cavity compared to the others and open with ease.

There is no lack of good jacketed bullets for the 450/45-70 anymore with the 350 North Fork/Swift A-Frame/300 Nosler PT/Barnes TSX and the 300 Speer Unicore.

Those that say you need a heavy weight for penetration are simply wrong in this caliber.The 300 Nosler Partition out penetrated all other weights and bullets tested and not by a small margin.

If you want a tough bullet in jacketed form.There are no tougher than the 350 North Fork.This one was shot into rock and gravel at over 2100 fps impact out of my Guide Gun..



My choice for Graboids if Burt hasn't killed them all.

FWIW, I agree that the 300 Nosler and the 350 NF are among the best for the 45-70. I would also include the 350 A-Frame though it seems to be a bit tougher in the front end which may slow its expansion, especially as speed falls off. I suspect, as is often the case, that the Partition is the better bullet when it comes to the widest range of possibilities, although perhaps not as ideal in some of them than one of the others. I wouldn't overlook the 350 and 405 Woodleighs either. While they tend toward being a bit softer, they still hold together extremely well, even in heavy bone impacts.

This rifle is mainly for Hog hunting in the swamps this Summer in South Georgia.....I want to Be able to punch the shields if I have to based on the shot angle. I just put a Leupold VXII 1x-4x 20mm on with Leupold QR rings and bases. I then ordered the full buckhorn rear site from Marlin that is used on the Cowboy 45-70 and replaced the factory unit.

I'm going to load today and head to the range next weekend to get her ready.

I have not shot the 350 A-Frame except it is said it opens down to 1250 fps..In pressure testing the 350 A-Frame drags it's fanny abit and causes "slightly" higher pressures than the North Fork if 25-50 fps is important to anyone.

No doubt it is a good bullet and it penetrates very well.Knowing a guy can push the 350 A-Frame and the 350 North Fork over 2100 fps(Guide Gun) with the right combination of components makes them a perty good deal.

Then again,the 300 Nosler over 2300 fps(Guide Gun) isn't all that bad either.

Lots of choices these days for the 45-70/450 Marlin compared to back when Cast ruled the smart hunters,not that there a bad choice either.

Hard casts work great at killing hogs, with not much bloodshot meat. I would start at 405 gr. and probably end there, too.

I went and picked up Cades new rifle from Gator today and got some fresh garden veggies to boot.

Zach and I then went to the range and shot the 17HMR,300 Win,350REM,223 and 450 Marlin.

I was working up a load with the 450 using the load in the title and a 1-4 Leupold VXII....here's the pics.....would you go with 39 or 40 gr? Keep in mind the crosshairs were covering the dot completely so some of this is user error.

A Beartooth Piledriver Jr. at 1650 fps is pure hell on hogs.
