Hey all,

I have a new .270 win(remmy 700 xcr, 24" barrel)I have been loading for. My last set was 60 gr. of H4831 w/ a 130 for only 2950-2975fps. I also loaded some with 60 gr. of RL22 for 2950-2975fps.

I really want the "majical" 3100 fps. Want is the key word here. I know I don't "need" it. I have multiple reloading manuals and they show various charge weights to get to 3100 with these powders. 58 to 62 max in most. Do you think 2 more grains will give me the speed?? (winny brass, 130 sst and interbond, wlr primers)

I have heard it said if RL22 won't get you there you aren't gonna get there. Anyone??

I feel your pain. I had a 270 that would not produce the magic numbers either. I just accepted it although I never tried the RL-22. I chose not to exceed 60.0 grains of H4831. I am hurtin for a 270 caliber rifle again. Ordered the barrel and decided to go 270 Roy to be assured of hitting the numbers I desire this time around.

When i first started using the 270,I was in college(the 70's),took the advice of others,loaded 61-62 of (old)H4831 with the 130 gr bullets,and went hunting,and shot the hell out of the things.I did not have a chronograph....

When IMR4831 came out(1973?)I followed the manual data provided by Dupont and loaded 59 grains.....and went hunting and shot the hell out of the rifles with that,too.

Then I got a chronograph........60 of H4831 gave a hair under 3000 fps;61 gr shoved it over 3000;59 of IMR gave over 3100...all from 22" barrels.....The biggest muley of my life fell to the 60-H4831 load.

I have one FW that gives a bit over 3100 with 61 of the present H4831 and 130 gr screw machine Nosler....another that gives 3080 with 60RL22;another that gives 3020 with 61 H4831...

And I had one Winchester 22" barrel that gave 3200 with no apparent pressure signs and 65 gr RL25 and the Barnes XLC(Barnes manual max).In truth, today, there are several powders that will get you 3100 or better with a 130 gr bullet.
Try RL 25;the Norma MRP,etc. I have long held this sneaking suspicion that 7828 is similar in performanve to the WW II H4831;not the same exactly,but similar. I have not had the chance to try ityet but I will.

The real point to this lengthy and boring recitation is that.with all these rifles, loads,and powders,I could not see a dime's worth of difference in how they killed, or shot.So when my recent M70 Edge rifle recorded about 3025 with the 130 Partition and 130 Bitterroot,stuck them both in the same place to 300 yards,I loaded them up for hunting season,and didn't worry a lick that I had not hit 3100.Excruciating over trivial numbers is part of this rifle game,but you can't let it rule everything you do.

I'm getting 3200 fps with 54 grains of RL17 and a 130 grain Interbond, Federal LRP, and Hornady brass. No pressure signs at all. I have also noticed that the recoil is significantly less. I feel like I'm shooting a 243. I'm very impressed with this powder and bullet combo.

If you want that then #1 get a 26" barrel.

That will at 100 fps day 1.

Then you can start playing with H4831sc

I don't recall the load but I am getting 3080 from RL19 and 130gr Nosler Solid Base. CCI LR primers and WW brass. I know it is a grain or two below max. Rifle is a Rem 700 mountain rifle w/ a 22"bbl.

It is an awesome combo. My M70 loves RL17. The 140 grain Hornady Interlock BTSP with 52.1 grains of RL17 will stack them right on top of each other as well. I didn't chrony this load since time was running out for me at the range.

I've only shot 1 load over the years for the 270 with 130gr bullets worked up to 55gr/IMR-4350 @ 3132fps out of a 24" barrel. Nolser got me started with that load in mamual #1 it's same load used #6 with my new 270 I'm getting 46fps more that published. I've had good luck with H-4831 and 150gr partitions.

I finally settle on 53gr/H4350 with 140gr TSX. Barnes has some loads mid 3100fps with their 130 TSX may want to give those a try.

Last 270 (130 gr BT and solid base) I worked with, a Ruger MkII with 22 inch barrel hit 3100 fps with 61 gr H4831sc, 3150 fps with 62 gr H4831sc with a CCI 250 in Lake City 30-06 brass necked down.

We settled on the 61 gr load and she shoots great.

I am getting 3110FPS with 53 grns RL17 and 140grn accubonds

I am goin' hunting with the current load. I just "want" the 3100 fps. I will give it a couple more grains and see where I get....after the hunt. I will also see if I can come up with some RL17....seems like the schnizzz....

My 23" bbl Steyr goes 3182 with 62/H4831sc/130NP. Tried 63gr several times, slightly loosened several primers. Backed it down to 62, all is well.

The only load that has consistantly given me over 3000 fps with the 130 gr. bullet in a 22" bbl. is 60 gr. of H450 powder (unfortunatly discontinued). Years ago I put in a good supply of the stuff, but now its about gone. Like BobinNH, I recently picked up some RL17 to load after the season. Headed to Wyoming on Wed. for deer and antelope.

I'm surprised you got the same MV with R22 as H4831. R22 has given better MV than H4831 in every 270 Win I've loaded for.

I would try the 4350s and R17 next.

I've gotten over 3100 with every 270 w/130 gr loads I've tried it in (5 IIRC, 2 with 22" barrels).

I also get 2950-2975 with 150's.

But just because I get that in my guns, doesn't mean you can/will.

loder: Yes, I've seen R22 outrun H4831 enough to assume that it will all the time.But sometimes the top end from H4831 gets up high enough in a particular barrel,so that you get to 3100 or so with it.H4831 seems to hit a "wall" that is easily seen, where you add more powder but get little more velocity.OTOH R22 seems to give more velocity as you add more.....and seems not to have that same "wall"as to velocity.....and pressure.

You should be able to with get there with RL22. It's just shy of 3100 in my Rem M700 with a 22" barrel with a few different bullet makes. In my rifles (incl my 280), the Hornady IB's seem to run a little faster then other bullets, even their same weight SP's. I've had RL22 work well in 3 Rem M700's so that's a good place to start IMO.

IMR 7828 should get you up there too, I've gotten pretty good velocities with it, but I had much better accuracy with RL22. Ramshot's Hunter should do it as well, it's done well for me and has a lot of potential. RL17 seems promising, but I've yet to try is so I can't say, but sure is worth a try.

My boy's 270 Win (savage 111fns) does 3050 with 130 Ballistic tips with 58 grains of H4831.
Do not sweat it man. Game can not tell the diff. Here is my boy last Friday.
