A friend wants to trade me a shotgun for a handgun. Trouble is that I know nothing about the shotgun. It is a Simmons Royal double barrel 12 gauge. I have never heard of it and have no idea what it is worth. He said he bought it in the late 60s and it was used then. It is in good shape, but was used. Need some help. Has anyone ever heard of it? What can you tell me about it and what is it worth?

What's the handgun?

Guessing a handgun in the coming years will skyrocket in usefulness and value with what will more than likely be some serious attacks on their ownership.

Hard to say if its a good trade not knowing what kind of handgun or what era the simmons is from...but generaly the simmons is a well made german shotgun [compares well with merkel shotguns]....the proof marks on the barrel flats of the shotgun should provide you with a lot of information on the gun including when it was made....

I'm not sure what handgun I would be trading. It would be one of a couple. The one I was considering is a Smith and Wesson model 19 4" with original target trigger and hammer. It is in like new condition with the original box and sales slip. I just don't know if the shotgun is worth that much. I paid $505 for the handgun just a few months ago. The shotgun is probably from the fifties.

Jerry... what is the book on your smith? reason I ask, is a trade is not only judged by book value, but in what value you place on a gun...the gun your friend is trying to trade you is worth less than $450 if it was brand new. Simmons Royal was one of several trade names used by the Crescent Arms Co. when they manufactured guns for different companies. I wouldn't give more than $150 or $200 in nice shape. They have no value, are hard to find parts for, and generally, aren't worth the headache, unless it is just one of those guns that you see and you just have to have it.

He's trolling for fish if he's looking for a straight-up swap.

No way.. That shotgun's worth $150 tops, and good luck finding parts for it...

Best thing is to gently tell your friend, "no thanks."
