Lost my small Nikon 400 yd. rangefiner. Looking to replace it.

What would you suggest?

Liked the shirt pocket size.
Use for turkey hunting, whitetail hunting, setting up targets in meadows, etc.
Small size, 4-500 yard range, price - $300 +/- max.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,

Jim

Vortex ranger. Touch over your price range at around $350, but meets your other requirements nicely.

Best,
C.

No. It's on my short list of things to buy. Based on reviews I've read it does quite well in it's price range, but isn't as nice as say a Leica 1600b at twice it's price or a bushnell arc1600 at 1.5x.

For a 4-500 yard rangefinder it'll do what you want and has angle compensation.

Wish I could give you first hand input, but I'm still saving my pennies.

Best,
C.

I have a Vortex Ranger 1000 and like it a lot. Small, light, and good optics. It pretty well runs heads up with my Leica CRF 1200 for a lot less money. I keep it in the console of my truck as I always carry a Sharps in the vehicle when I am out and about and if I need the rifle a rangefinder is a must when reaching out for coyotes, etc.

Appreciated.

The Vortex appears to have it's fans. I have a Vortex spotter that functions well.

Thanks,

Jim

azelkhuntr,

Thanks for participating here. It's appreciated.

My Nikon just disappeared. Have no idea where it is but I am satisfied that I have looked every where that it might be in my home. I may have left it in the woods some where.

Tell me more about the "Chuck Adams."

There appears to be not much information about real world function of these units. I used mine frequently and am a bit lost without it.

Thanks again,

Jim

I sure love my Leica 1600B, even at twice the price of the Nikon. It was super handy being able to range out to around 1 1/4 mile or so when planning stalk routes on goats in Wyoming. We were surprised how often we were wrong about which terrain feature was closer than another one when hunting uneven country. That Leica saved us a lot of unnecessary hiking, and the angle compensation was confidence inspiring when I had to shoot off the rim of a canyon down into its bottom. It also proved its superiority when ranging in blowing rain and snow. I would not go back to the Leupold, Nikon or Bushnell I've used in the past or the Vortex that I tried before I bought the Leica.

Here are a couple of threads that discuss the Zeiss Victory 8x45 T* RF binocs.

Not cheap but really great glass and fast ranging out to 1,500+ yds.

Mine is a Leica 900, bought from Cameraland/Doug about three years ago. It's all I need, works great out past 700 yards very dependably, beyond 800 fairly often. I'd suggest keeping an eye on the classifieds for one of these.

I really like the simplicity of the thing...nothing fancy, ranges fast, easy to use, and small.

Just bought a Leupold RX1000i TBR last week to replace an old Bushnell (that sure worked well for many years). I haven't had my new Leupold in the field yet, but bought it after trying one owned by a hunting buddy - the unit is very small and will range small objects reliably out to 700 yards (as far as I tried with it). I will let you know after next season how happy or sad I am with it. Got it on sale last week at Dick's for $349.00.

Gentlemen I do appreciate the input. I find my retirement income is restricting my expenses so I have set a limit that can be stretched only a little.
Odessa , That Leu does look tempting. I would be very interested in your experiences with it. Any update would be welcomed.

Thanks,

Jim

I've "upgraded" my LRF a few times, but for your requirements I'd look at a Bushnell in your price range and call it good. They tend to be priced competitively and they work. I used a $200 unit for years that supposedly ranged 800 yards. It sent a lot of groundhogs to wherever it is groundhogs go when they split open from various centerfire rifles at ranges out to 700+ yards. It would range 600+ yards in most conditions and worked perfectly until it didn't work at all. I wouldn't trade my present LRF for one, but I'd not consider myself handicapped to use another Bushnell..........

In your price range, I can not recommend this rangefinder highly enough: http://www.basspro.com/Leupold-RX600-Digital-Rangefinder/product/10202112/. It doesn't have the distance like some others out there, but it does everything Leupold says it will. At $199, it's a steal.

Plus 1 on the Nikon 800. Get one and never look back. It's also in your budget.
