Here's mine, I call him Old Brownie.

[Linked Image]

Old Brownie's an 89 Ford F-150 that I bought from a sailor on Whidbey Island Wa. in 1991. It had 18,000 miles on it at the time and I have since added another 260,000. It has the legendary Ford 300 straight six, though by 1989 they called it a five point something litre. All I have done over the years is change the oil and have the injectors cleaned every hundred thousand miles. I am even running the original clutch.

As you can tell from the photos, I haven't washed it in about five years and I store it outside while his younger brother (a 99 Ford F-250 Super Duty 7.3 diesel gets the garage.

Old Brownie has never let me down (knock wood), gets reasonable mileage, has that great low end torque, and has gotten me out of a lot a bad places. I use him mostly during winter and weeky trips to the dump in summer. I have over 250,000 on my 99 F-250 which gets the bulk of my long trips now.

How about you guys, got an old truck that you feel connected to?

I'll be driving it for a couple weeks now I suppose while my 07 F150 is being repaired from a deer hit last week.

Mine's your basic 351M with an auto trans, 9" ford rear, dana 44 front axle, np205 transfer case. We did a heap of mechanical work with simple wear items like ball joints, u-joints, seals, bearings, brakes, tune up stuff... got everything tight again. It's a great truck mechanically but it's showing rust in the body. I replaced the floors last fall and I suppose I'll start on the rest of the body soon.

Fun old beater.

Sorry, no pictures.

My "new" Old Faithful is a 1996 Ford Bronco. Has 3" body lift and 4" suspension lift so I can run 36" itres with plenty of clearance. Powered by a 351 engine that has been "modified" and gets 400 HP to the 4.11 axles.

The original Old Faithful (which still runs) is my 1963 Scout which has the 196 4-cylinder engine (talk about low-end pull). It has 4.88 gears so it won't do much over 55 on the highway, but off-road it can't be stopped.

I love those old Scouts. Back around 1960 my Grandpa had a 49 Willys Wagon that was very cool. He even bought an old war surplus altimeter and compass which he mounted in the dash for desert navigating.

Here is mine. "Ol' Red." 1975 Ford F250 4x4, 360 V8 engine, 4.1 differential, with two sets of commercial grade tire chains, and a steel Gem Top shell.

I bought it new in 1975, and it has always been used specifically for my outdoor activities: hunting, camping, fishing, exploring rough areas, etc. I have only 95,500 miles on it and it still runs like a champ. I've taken it into some places for which I probably should have had my head examined ... but it always brought me back out.

I think I'll keep it. wink

I have a 1963 Chevy Pu that I drive every day.It has the 250 six in it and gets good mileage.
The other is a 1971 Toyota FJ40,with the equivalent six in it,for going off road or in mud.
The wife likes it when I drive these instead of the 92 f150,it has a 460 engine in it and mileage kinda sucks.

My old faithful was bought new in 03 but has over 211,000 miles and is still my daily driver. It a Dakota quadcab 4x4 and do to its size and great traction off road it is narrow eough to get in most trails that the Jeep I used to have ran yet rides much better ( well paint on both sides are now evenly beat up) .

I will have to find a picture since it fits right in with the ones above. I found a white shell cheap for it so being grey with white cap it looks old school (when the only color truck cap you could buy was white).

Ever notice that when you drive around town you see a LOT of Chevey and even Dodge trucks running around. However when you ask for pictures of older....working....trucks, you always see mostly Fords. There is a reason for that!!!

Big Red (F250 diesel) served well until we sold it. Now I drive a F150.

My old faithful is a 99 dodge Ram 2500 4x4. 360 gas engine, 5 speed, rubber floor mats, manual doors and windows. 215,000 miles and that includes a trip to Virginia this past summer! It's my daily driver/tow/off road truck.

those old Fords from the late Seventies had about the stoutest running gear , transmissions , and bodies ever put on pickup trucks , but the 360 engine many of them came with was THE worst POS to ever roll oughta Ford Motor company ....ole Henry is prolly still rolling in his grave over those turds .......I'm flat amazed there is still one running somewheres..........

Here's a 1970 F250 with around 500,000 miles on it. Yes the engine has been replaced once that I know of but it was a very long time ago. It's a 360FE with an alum 4V intake and a 650 holley vac secondary elect choke carb. Stock exhaust manifolds and an RV-ish cam.

4 speed trans, 4 wheel drive and this old truck works hard, this truck has always worked hard. Starts great, runs great, never takes any oil and it's got all the power I need.

Dave......a 1970 engine is a different breed from the mid to late Seventies smogged-out engines . A 1970 would still be a high compression engine .

But I've never seen a 360 in a 1970 or earlier truck.....those were mostly 352 s ; which was a high compression motor .

I bought a new F150 in 1975 with a 360 . By the time it had 40000 miles on it , it wouldn't start reliably , due to very low compression from the heads being wore out junk . Had the heads redone , and got another 40000 out of it before the same problem begain to resurface , at which point I traded it off .

As far as power it was totally gutless and wouldn't pull an empty 16 ft. stock traler at 45 mph into a headwind . Even without headwind , you were lucky to top a hill at 50mph with your foot all the way in it .

There were lots of those 360 pickups around in those years and I NEVER heard anyone brag them .

A company I worked for in the same era had a bunch of Ford medium trucks with the 330 V-8 ......about the same thing , oil burning powerless turds with numerous engine problems and rebuilds below 50000 miles.

The old, "old faithful" was the 1986 Ford F250 Super Duty, 351, five on the floor, manual hub 4 wheel drive, sport cab with cap I bought new. "Big Gray" as she was the charcoal gray color option. 275,000 miles later sold it to a kid in South Carolina that was not at all concerned with gas mileage ( 10 mpg loaded, 12 mpg unloaded).

Moved to the next (old, not so, faithful) a used 1996 F150 4x4 XLT with the 5.0l and (POS)AOD trans in extended cab. After replacing the trans for the second time sold off to someone who would not use it to work hard.

Current "old falthful" 2001 GMC 2500 HD, 6.0l, Automatic with tow package, Extended Cab, basic work truck I bought new. 185,000 miles, one transmission replacement (expected as I towed boats etc. for work for the first 90,000 miles) other than that, very minimal upkeep other than routine manitenance. Will run till she dies or the kids get out of college, which ever comes first.

Anybody else with a straight six Ford 300? Every once in a while all the stars line up and some industrial designer catches lighting in a bottle, the Chevy small block V-8, Winchester Model 70, Douglas DC-3 and Ford 300 straight six are a few examples of that.
