On my walk to the shop this morning I heard the all too familiar sound and sight of a bunch of ravens and several eagles..which usually means another deer met it's end, so I found a deer trail and started walking, sure enough about 150 yards behind my shop I found this fresh kill, an antlerless big bodied buck no less. Last year I found 3 such kills on our land. It sure is unsettling walking up on these kills knowing the wolves just might be watching you.

Yep. Let em grow unchecked until they reach some precieved level. Screw the damage that's done getting there.

Must have been one of the "weak or sick" deer that the wolves prey on.

(Sarcasm intended.)

Man am I glad we dont have those things down here. We got yotes, and I figure they may kill a deer once in a while, but mostly feed on rodents, etc.

That's nasty!

No smiley face here ( I have to put this on the post so TRH can tell if its a joke or not)

Dang it, Handwerk, you're gettin the troops all excited again! smile
Most of these folks aren't used to seeing that stuff.

I forget just where you live in relat to Cook Co and Grand Marais, and if you know the Eckels. But here's a link to what Dave found just outside of town:

http://www.boreal.org/drupal/content/wolf_kill_discovered_pincushion_ski_trail

The COs killed a mangy, almost hairless wolf that was hanging around Gunflint Lake and growling at the Lodge's customers. Not too good for business. smile

The wolves are just goin' about their business. I'm up over the hill and "my" deer have all moved down toward the big lake now. They ate a couple thousand pounds of corn before they left. I saw wolves chasing deer here in Jan, but found zero kills this year.
I was wondering if you maybe broke one of that deer's long bones to check the marrow for health. Just whack the bone with an axe or something and look for white, yellow, or red marrow.

Yeah, here in NW Montana after several mild winters, we pretty much are running out of whitetail deer. Now we are buck only for next year. Wolves? Oh, no, wolves don't eat much. Nope.

Well,

They were hungry, because they sure as hell didn't leave anything.

Some of the kills we find here are left about 1/2 eaten.

Looks like a big deer.

Good timing on this post. I just ran into an old coworker that was looking at pistols at Gander Moutain. Wants to get one to carry to and from his bow stand. Said he's been seeing lots of wolves at his place (South Central WI) and just not comfortable around them. This guy is a very experienced hunter.

A few snares set about 24-30" off the ground with about an 18" loop and a deer stop at 8" should do the trick. wink

HW, what are the deer populations like in your area?

IE, are deer numbers in decline, normal or above average?

Brad, they reached a high about 3 years ago, but with a couple years of liberal bonus tags and our wolves, numbers continue to drop. Last year was my camps worst in alomst 10 years.I think the harvest was 20%+ down in our county last season.

Up the Cascade River about 5 miles. Hi.

Well, if you live by the lake, you see this stuff every year. And the carcasses are starting to pile up on 61. That's what I hate seeing.

This one was in my backyard last winter. I wanted to track him for awhile just for the heck of it, but had to go to work. Last look I got of him he was heading for Minnesota.
