I have a 700 Mtn rifle in .257 Roberts and the trigger is factory heavy. I'm thinking close to 6# or so.
If I take this to a gunsmith to have the trigger adjusted what kind of job should I be looking for and what should I expect to pay?
Does a standard trigger job shorten the trigger pull, lighten it and take out the overtravel? What should I be asking the gunsmith to make sure I am getting a good trigger job?
Also, would you go ahead and have it free-floated and bedded or would you shoot it first after the trigger job is complete?
For a factory trigger to be safe with no slam-fires would you stay around 3-3.5# on the final trigger weight?
Here's a picture of the rifle (bottom). If I can get it to shoot well then I plan on keeping it to use as my varmint/deer gun here in SC. I haven't been able to get a decent group with that trigger though.

Do the trigger first and see what your accuracy results are.. Many times this job alone will help your groups a ton..

As far as the job itself, I would first ASK the smith what exactly he/she does on a full trigger job.. Some will just do some brief adjustments and call it good.. Others will work over all the internals..

You need to state exactly what you wish the result to be; weight, engagement (creep), overtravel etc..

By doing that you should not be disappointed at the conclusion.

Triggers are usually reworked as part of an accuracy enhancing package, not as a stand alone accuracy improvement. If you are wanting to improve the overall accuracy potential of the rifle, then look the entire rifle over to see what can be improved and make the necessary corrections. Good bedding and a clean, square crown will do more to improve accuracy than simply adjusting the trigger. However, a nice clean trigger pull, can make a poor shooting gun feel better.

A local 'smith who seems to have a very high reputation just quoted me $50 for a trigger job. He shoots a 700 Mtn Rifle himself.
Another shop quoted me $65.
I don't want to dump $150-$200 into the rifle just yet so I am going to start out with the trigger job.
I'll take it to the range and go from there.

I just spoke to both gunsmiths again.
For $50 the 1st gunsmith will take the trigger assembly apart, clean it thoroughly and smooth all surfaces. He then puts in a spring kit and sets it to a crisp 3# trigger.
For $65 the 2nd gunsmith will take it apart, clean it, hone the surfaces and set the trigger using the factory adjustments to any trigger pull over 3#.
Which would you opt for?

The one with the replacement spring kit.........generally turns out better than trying to get a good let-off with a stock spring, although sometimes the stock spring works OK.

anyone ever have one that refuses to let go of creep and not sacrifice slam fire? seems i have run into this and it is a yes or no deal... another option is to just buy a nice trigger and shoot it. if it sucks pull the trigger and flop the gun smile

I did my own using this guys kit. It is quite simple and the results were outstanding. He is a good guy. Ken

He has other kits as well. Ken

Anybody else?
I'm going to the 1st gunsmith's shop today to see his shop and speak with him in person. I've already been in the other shop before.
