Looking to add a lever gun (or 2) different than a M94 (got a couple). Looking at a couple 300 savages in a 99 and a 99A in 358. The 358s are of course pricey. Is the 99A a desireable model? Read thru the BLR thread but are the current ones good? Some say the current production BLRs aren't what they once were in quality (accuracy, jamming). What's your experiences/opinions on these?
Thanks

I have never owned a BLR so I'll leave that to someone else but Ive been a fan of Savage 99s for many years. Any 99 is good so really your just choosing the features you like is a good place to start. The rotary magazine models are really the premium ones. Nice thing is since the collectors haven't discovered them in a big way yet do prices are pretty reasonable.

An uncle of mine had a 99 with the rotary magazine in 284. I believe my cousin's son still has it. He won't part with it because he was his grandfather, that's the one I really want!! Mostly because it was his.....family heirloom and all.

The Savage collectors disdain the postmil 99's with the tang safety. I have a .358 series A and a 99A .243, along with older ones. There's no flies on any of'em.

A 99 in 358 wil bring top dollar. The eternal discussion about BLR vs. SAvage 99 boils down to this: Can you find a 99 that you can afford? If not, buy the next BLR you find.

That's how I ended up with a pretty nice BLR 358

Its not that the BLRs' aren't well made--they are, but I have developed an affinity for classic American lever actions that keeps me from buying one. Not to mention they take ugly to a whole new dimension. Beauty is, though, in the eye of the beholder after all, and YMMV.

I'm going to keep looking for a while, in the meantime I found a Rem 35 whelen pump that I may get and use it with the iron sights, has the straight stock not monte. I have an affinity for the 35s.

I like the 35s too.

I've got quite a few 99s. The 99s in 300 Savage are great rifles in a fine chambering and the most plentiful of the 99s. Hence, you can find a nice 99 in 300 Savage for a reasonable sum. I recommend you do just that.

That 99 in .284 mentioned earlier in this thread would likely draw a higher premium than the .358 all other things being equal.

Yep, I know that 284 is probably worth a few extra pesos. And like a bonehead I passed up a 358 99 in good shape at a decent price locally. At the time, didn't realize what it was worth so I passed.... oh well hindsight.

I like rotary magazine 99s and own a couple. I own multiple Winnys and Marlins. I like them all.

You could not pay me to hunt with a BLR. Not interested. Can't find one good thing to say about a BLR, in any regard. JMO.....
