Have been looking for a couple of Smiths for some time and came across them over the last few weeks...

In 1990 I bought what turned out to be a first year of production 6" Model 57 and have been looking for a 4" to go with it...finally found one in very nice condition but not so perfect as one would not want to shoot it... No box, paperwork and didn't have the original grips but it was 99% and a very smooth action. The Cokes that are now on it were some that came on a 27 that I bought a few years ago...










The other was a long barrel Model 48...found it locally for a decent price with the original numbered to the gun service stocks. I switched them out for a set of target. Shot the gun Saturday and it shot well.... A friend thinks he has an extra Model 17 .22 LR cylinder so it may become a two caliber M48 to go with my 4"....

That 4" M57 will grow on you. One leaped out of a used cabinet in Idaho Falls and grabbed me about 20 years ago and still hasn't let go. It goes pretty well with its sisters of the other barrel lengths. But when I head for the hills, it just seems to be the one that goes along...

I keep telling myself there is no good reason for me to buy a 5" M27
or 627

...or a Python.

Do I want to buy them anyway? Sure.

Thanks...I have good taste in women also but find that the older I get the more I prefer the handguns...like in this case... You can already have one at home and it doesn't get pissed off when you bring another one home...

Nice find's but it aint over yet... You now need a Vanilla flavored Model 57 in Factory Nickel 4" configuration to go with that Blued one of 4" length ! and a 6" version of the model 48 with the spare .22 cylinder.... It never ends... Shown is my Model 57 in Nickel and my First year offered 1959 Model 48 Four screw revolver with it's spare .22 cylinder. S&W did not offer these 48's with the spare .22 LR cylinder's until after 1961 so this one must have been shipped back to the factory and been factory fitted for it. I say this as the .22 LR cylinder has Left hand extractor threads and the original .22 W.M.R. cylinder that came in the gun in December 1959 when it shipped has Right the hand extractor threads...Keep up the Hunt...TheGeneral

General...always a pleasure to see your guns....

I do have a "Vanilla"....it is badly scratched up however and one day needs to go back to the factory for a re-nickel that hopefully will fill in all the pits....





















As to the 6" M48...have had three of them two with the originally factory fitted LR cylinder....they all went to friends. I would like to find an early 60s vintage gun to go with a 1962 M53 Jet I have...till then these will do....

which brings up a question. I have a model 48, six inch that i paid 150bucks for. The guy thought he was sticking me i am sure.
It was a bankor punta pistol and sticky extraction. After i had the cyclinders buffed no more problems. How would one find a .22lr cyclinder for said pistol?

I see nothing a bench grinder and a rattle can of silver paint can't fix.

All you need is a model 17 or 18 cylinder... They are out there, you just have to look... Getting the rest of the internal pats is usually just a call to Brownells or GunParts Corp. Then just bring it to a gunsmith who can time a S&W and make sure everything locks up square...
