I have tried the white box for general shooting and found it inconsistent. Got rid of what I had.

Hunting for what? If you are going to point it at a deer, I would suggest using the best ammo you can find, maybe some critical defense +P's or +P Gold Dots. BUT, I say this from exactly ZERO experience, only from what I would start with if such an idea struck me.

I would guess that they would be a little on the soft side and probably not offer a lot of penetration.

Deer aren't particularly hard to penetrate, so if if placement is good I cannot imagine that it wouldn't work.

My 45 Springfield loves these bullet and groups them into quarter size groups at 15 to 20 yards. They are easy to find and the cost isn't that bad. I have Speer Gold Dot 180 and 230 , Hornady Plus P 230 gr. I will try them on Coyotes when they are called in close and deer from my tree stands . I guess the only way to know if they work is use them . Expansion is what i want on small Whitetail.

They would probably work fine 30yds and in with good placement. I prefer the 230 xtp hand loaded to a little over 900 fps. just a little tougher bullet for when you hit bone.

I'm COMPLETELY unimpressed with FMJ's for hunting; pretty much worthless, even on small game.

I think the "HP" in the subject line refers to hollow points...

Me too Kevin. The lead SWC bullets work a whole lot better on the small stuff. E

Winchester white box 230gr Hollow Points have impressed me quite a bit. I have run them in soaked phone books and compared them against 230gr Hydrashoks and also the 230gr Golden Sabre. The white box bullets expanded better than both the Hydrashoks and the Golden Sabre did, they retained mor weight thant he hydrashoks and a tad less than the Golden Sabre. I have posted photo from the test against the hydrashok in the past, but I think I have lost the photos from the test versus the Golden Sabres. Here are the Hydrashok Vs. White Box photos again. Left to right: Hydrashok, Hydrashok, White box, White box, White Box All bullets were fired into "fresh" 24 hour soaked phone books, not ones that had been previously shot.

While a .45 ACP will fell deer-size game, I am not sure if it's suitable for that purpose. But if you're comfortable hunting with one & it's legal, weight all factors and decide.

The 45 acp is a better big round than most would think as long as you limit your range to 50 yards and under

From the photos that white box stuff looks pretty good. Oughta work on a deer within a reasonable range.

My bad for not catching the HP part. Complete turn around, good for everything up to small deer out to around 50 yards-ish.

. . . Left to right: Hydrashok, Hydrashok, White box, White box, White Box All bullets were fired into "fresh" 24 hour soaked phone books, not ones that had been previously shot. From the photos it looks like the premium priced Hydra-Shok "posts" are merely a marketing gimmick.

I don't know Okie, those Hydra-shoks look to be much more of a solid mass than the white box. Maybe it's just me.

R So the 45 ACP is not suitable for deer but it is suitable to shoot a 300 pound heavily clothed two legged adversary that may be shooting back. Yea that makes a lot of sense
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I don't know Okie, those Hydra-shoks look to be much more of a solid mass than the white box. Maybe it's just me. The Hydrashoks lost lead from the "cone" area of the nose. I think that lead to them having a slightly smaller expanded diameter. The white box JHPs opened slightly larger, retained more weight, and penetrated about 2" deeper on average. As I understand it the post of the Hydrashok bullet is designed to prevent the cavity from becoming plugged when passing through heavy clothing.
