I took out my old Remington 581 with the 308 I was testing loads. 20 rounds out of a sub 7lb 308 Win is about I care to shoot from a bench in one session. I bought this for $40 when I was 13 or so from a guy down the dirt road I lived on. Since then I have probably refinished the stock three times and added a spacer to increase the LOP. Bobbed the barrel a bit since the enthusiastic cleaning of a 13 YO with a 3 piece aluminum rod does bad things to a crown. Bedded, free floated, pressure point, crack repaired, pen spring in the trigger....I have learned a lot and working with this old girl. She was put together back in 1961 and has no reason to shoot the way she does after all shes been through. I guess this was supposed to be the cheap alternative to the 541 and model 52. She has her warts...never cared for the plastic quarter rib or the plastic mags - I was lucky to find 3 used for $5 each at a gun shop.

I really havent shot her in recent memory so I just ripped out a couple groups fairly quick. Just shooting, not really trying to make tiny groups. The rifle has always shot about every well and it will shoot exceptionally with some of the better target ammo. I really need to take this one out more often. If you see a lonely old 581 sitting in a rack take her home, you may be pleasantly surprised. I think this would be the last one to go...

Nice!

My Dad gave me a 580Y in 72, my first rifle smile

It likes both versions of Wolf and SK Jagd over most other ammo and punches similar groups. I am on the lookout for a 582 but have not found one for less than 275.00.

I replaced the youth stock with a Numerich Birch stock years ago and fairly recently had it duplicated in Black Walnut. I need to finish it up and get it back into the woods.

Those 580 series Remingtons were a great rifle for the money. I have owned a few of them, they all shot like yours - excellent.

When it was time for my kids to start shooting I bought them 581s and a few years ago when my grandson was old enough to start I luckily found a new in the box 581 for him.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

I wonder why Remington didnt bring the 580 series back rather than their recent, and expensive, bolt 22 (forget the model). It is a simple tube receiver and should be easy to manufacture.

I also am mystified why there is relative few standard velocity ammo offering compared to the high velocity stuff. For distance rim fires are used, the standard velocity is generally more accurate and has a much quieter report. I guess it is the magnum mentality.

RDW that is some great looking wood in that stock!

I had the tubular mag 582 and it was a great shooting little rifle.

I too have often wondered why Rem didn't reintroduce the 580 series. With a few cosmetic changes it would have little competition in looks or accuracy.
