How does it compare to a 10-22?

I think that it is a good, basic, 22 LR semi-auto, but I don't think that it carrys as well as the Ruger 10/22 because of the protruding magazine. I had the opportunity to shoot a Marlin 60SS awhile back. This is the stainless rifle with a tubular magazine and it handled and shot quite well.

The cost difference isn't all that much, so I can't think of a scenario where I wouldn't opt to buy a Ruger 10/22. I think that the Wal-Mart special 10/22K-22 balances a little better then the short, more common, carbines. Other than my Ruger 10/22 mannlichers, all of them that aren't still NIB have after-market barrels.

Wouldn't honestly buy a new 10/22 ... IMHO price went up and quality went down.

About all that I use on a Ruger 10/22 is the receiver group and I use that as a foundation for an after-market barrel and stock.

Thanks for the replies. I can get a new Marlin for less than half of what a new 10-22 would cost.

That must be a great price! Around here, Marlin 795s are selling for $140 to $160, with Ruger 10/22s selling for $190 to $290.

Cabela's was selling a stainless Marlin 60 with either a blue or pink laminated stock for $199 awhile back.

ColeYounger: All the Marlin Rimfire Rifles I have ever owned and shot were quite accurate indeed.
I have never owned a 795 Marlin and the reason is obvious - the hang down magazine precludes any kind of quick and "clunk free" useage on Ground Squirrels.
I would take the price of the Marlin 795 and apply it to either a new or used Ruger 10/22! I think that would be a good (better?) investment of ones funds!
The magazine of the Ruger 10/22 is simply an ingenious and wonderful device!
Its never in the way, quick to change, relatively in-expensive and is pretty reliable. I have about 16 or 18 of them.
My good friend Don that I Hunt Ground Squirrels with here in Montana has exactly 40 (fourty) 10/22 clips!
He loads them up the night before a Gopher shoot and then is in constant "battery" (ready to fire) for 2 1/2 or 3 hours on our Hunts!
I have bought Ruger 10/22 clips (used) in the past as cheaply as $3.00 each!
The "magazine" is a very important part of a semi-auto 22 Rifle.
Best of luck if you decide to go with the Marlin 795.
You might also want to take a 22 "snap cap" with you to the store if you look a 795 over!
Try the trigger pull.
The 795 trigger may not be "improvable" by the average shooter.
The Ruger 10/22 has MANY options available for the regular person who wants to improve the 10/22's trigger.
Again best of luck.

I've had probably between a half-dozen and a full dozen 10-22's over the years. I wish I still had one of the stainless ones with a pretty walnut stock. I've got a couple of extended clips for them. The clip sticking down on the Marlin won't bother me. The thing that does bother me is the fact that extra clips will be harder to find.

I got the last one yesterday at Cabela's. The wait was terrible and a guy asked about them after me. I told him I got the last. $119.95 before tax and with a $20 rebate. Much lighter than I remember a 10-22 being. Worst thing is they had no extra clips in stock, so I'll have to look for one. I'll be able to get one at the big Tulsa gunshow in a few weeks though.

No. Marlin 795. I am supposedly going to get a $20 rebate on it too. Cost should end up being $99.95 plus tax, so about $108 OTD.
