I ran into a problem today that I'd be curious to see if anyone else has seen. I just bought a new Leupole VX-2 3-9x40 scope for my Remington 7600. I took it to the range and even with the elevation turned as high as it will go the gun is still shooting about 8 inches low at 100 yards.

I've tried putting some shims under the front of the one-piece Weaver base and will go back to the range tomorrow to see if that does the trick. But that seems kind of clugy. I'm wondering if anyone has seen a similar problem and may have some insight.

Thanks,

Ben

Don't know but:

Do you have the right base?
Is it mounted right?
Are the rings of different heights?
Just some things to look at. Sean

I believe you are looking at it backward... the 760 scope cannot be bore-sighted by eye or it would jump out at you. The rear of the base needs to go up, not the front and I suspect you have adjusted it to shoot as LOW as it will... now reverse it to get it on paper...

Thanks Art. You're right. I realized last night as I was thinking about it that I had shimmed the wrong side. But at the range with no shimming I could only get it to hit low. I'm going out this morning to try it with the shims in (which I'll move to the back). But it still seems odd that it would shoot low. I'm going to put the same scope on my m700, with mounts I've used sucessfully with other scopes. That will verify if the problem is with the scope or not (which I tend to doubt).

I checked the height on the rings and base. They are identical front to back, so unless that gun is meant to have bases/rings of varying heights they should be correct. I'm wondering if the top of the reciever doesn't have a slight dip to it.

From here it would take clairvoyance to do more than guess, but I would bet you simply KNEW it HAD to go up and did not try the other direction... Try it by centering the crosshairs vertically first (and if you can do it with the rifle sandbagged into place to watch them move it would be much better) and then see if the problem does not correct itself...

I would never admit to having done the same thing... but I have wasted some ammo before!

I've had a similar problems with several rifles. Since you are using a Weaver base, I'd recommend that you get a set of Burris
Signature rings for those bases, and a set of Burris offset inserts, and use the inserts to center the scope. This is the setup that I use on all of my rifles. Other advantages of the Signature rings is that they hold the scope tightly without ring marks, and they take care of alignment problems without creating stress in the scope tube. The Signature rings are a bit more trouble to set up than other types, but well worth the effort. Good luck!

Ben,

What brand of Weaver style bases did you get? This past weekend I replaced the one piece (brand unknown) Weaver style that came on the 7600 I won a few years ago with Leupold 2 piece bases & med. height QRW rings. The first shot at 50 yds. was dead on. I tweaked it just a little to zero it at 100 yds. They feel very solid & should hold up as the 30-06 recoil is pretty mild. I just thought I'd pass this on as the one piece mounts that were on my rifle seemed pretty flimsy & I want to get a ghost ring that mounts on the Weaver style base for brush hunting up in Wi. Good Luck, Bruce

I've been hunting with a 7600 this year. I put a VX-1 2x7 on an Aimtech see-through base and it works fine.

while I don't have any use for loopie scopes I use nothing but loopie bases and rings on my rifles. I do not care for weaver stuff. I would suggest that you replace the weaver base with a loopie base. That is what I have on my 7600. tom

I've use a 1pc Weaver and Burris rings on my 7600/35Whelen with a Leup1.5x5 with no problems at all. I would try another scope before spending any $$$$ on new bases or rings.

Sure there are "stronger" setups out there, but I've never found a properly set Weaver system fail using good rings like Millets or Burris. In fact, it was a Weaver/Millet system I trusted on my 375HH on a Yukon trip a few years back. Lots of shooting before the trip and the trip itself......no problem at all.

Some of the Leupold and Weaver bases put the rings too far forward on these guns, esp the 760s. I had to get a set of Weavers "custom" made for my 760/.308 in order to get the front ring far enough back.

I bought a 7600 in 308 last year. I put a Leupold 1-piece base on it along with a Bushnell Elite 3x9. Had no problems with height adjustments on the scope. In fact, I barely had to touch it.
