Question: Some C&C boat tails have a reputation for separating inside game, leaving the jacket behind. What is y'all's experience with Hornady's Interlock boat tail?

As an FYI, I'm thinking about loading some 162-grainers at about 2600 fps in my 7x57. I've had some cheap C&C bullets come apart at about the same speed.

killed a lot of deer with them. No problems.

Mike most of my experience was with 180g 30-06 and 140g 270 Win flavours, and some 150g in 308 Win.

I found them a tough bullet and I still use them in the 30-06 because I've a lot left over.

I'd be amazed if the 162s in the 7 Mauser didn't work great on game.

162 gr Interlocks and a 7x57? I predict deceased porkers and exit holes.

I used the 165 and 190's out of a 30-06 and 30-338. I don't remember finding and of the 190's. The 165 seemed to work great too.

The only bullet I remember shredding its jacket was the Nosler Solid Base of old.

I've taken a few with them. Most noteworthy to me was a 139btsp out of a 7-08. Took a decent mule deer with it at 400+. Broke the rib going in deflected off the spin, exited...so no idea if the jacket stayed put.

I've pushed them in a 270 WSM and have shot whitetails close and at around 250 yds away. Never a problem with separation.

Once I shot a previously wounded buck at about 45 yds with a "Texas Heart Shot" and the Interlock boat tail went clean through the buck lengthwise. Blew out a hole at the base of his throat that you could fit your fist in.

I shot a wt buck facing me at 30 yards. bullet entered his brisket and shed its jacket going thru the sternum the lead core went about 8" farther and he only ran about 30 yards. that was from a 270 140 grn boattail from a hornady light magnum factory load. I don't like boattails unless they are mono or bonded.

Well Rev,if you place the bullet in the heart/lung area,you will have pork chops.

Used the 117 gr version in a .25/06 on antelope,they died with no fuss.

Mike I shot a literal couple tons of game with that bullet. Once in awhile I'd find jacket and core separation, but invariably they were in kissing distance, if not still slightly attached. Not exactly a catastrophic failure, killed game the size of elk ( actually, they looked just like elk!) with them.
No Problemo.

This was one if the biggest bodied mule deer I ever killed.

You'll be just fine. I've used them on deer at 7mm rem mag speeds and they work just fine. Should work great in your mauser....

My original Gunsmith recommended (mid 1970's) Hornadys. When they came out with the Boat-tail bullets I tried them too. However, I found the flat based bullets were more accurate. I've killed deer and pig with these bullets. If you hit an animal broadside or quartering away the bullet will pass right through. Leaving an exit hole twice as big as the original caliber. I've used these bullets in 25, 270 & 30 caliber. The pig below was shot with my 270 Winchester, a broadside shot, he took two steps and then rolled down the hill. They have always performed perfectly.

Rev. I wouldn't have any suspicions/doubts about the 162 HBTSP from your 7 'Mouser' (grin).

I've been using 139 HBTSP from 7 RM @ 3300 fps on Whitetail for many yrs. it's the only billet I use in the 7 mag for deer.

I promise you I have not had 1 to fail in any respect **remember** 3300 fps.

If I were you I'd load those 162s and go forth and pick up dead piggies.

A few years ago I was sighting my 30-06 out on the frozen ocean. My shots were landing in an upturned chunk of sea ice at around 200 yards.



These were typical. It's almost hard to tell the 200 Accubond from the 190 Hornady BTSP.

A fun thing happened this past October in Utah. I was elk hunting with my two younger brothers, we had parked our truck and walked to a knoll to glass across a wide draw. We soon spotted a decent 6x6 at 600yards, brother Bill wanted him. I stayed put while the other two tried to get closer as I watched the bull though my spotting. At 300yards Bill shot the Bull and I saw his bullet(through the spotting scope) strike the bull and then exit throwing snow up on the other side of the animal. The elk was DRT. You may have already guessed that the bullet was a Hornady, 162BT out of a 7mm STW.

Thanks, guys, I really appreciate it. The 154-grain SP must be holding together well since I have yet to recover even a piece of one. I was just wondering if the BTs would be the same since Hornady put the "locking ring" in them as well. I'm gonna give them a try and see which are more accurate in my rifles, the 154SP or 162BTSP. It looks like it's gonna be a toss-up as far as holding together on game is concerned.

Rev I have killed literally a few hundred lbs of game ( 5 deer) ;^) using the hornady bts . 3 with the 117 gr .257 , 1 with the 140 gr. .270 and 1 with the 165gr .308. I seem to recall MD posting he had some issue with the .257 at some point but all my limited experience has been great. I've never caught one to see if the jacket separated. At 7x57 speeds I think you will be golden.

I have killed my majority of deer with the load. but, yes i5ll seperatre core from cup given appropriate speed.
