Most solid have a steel jacket, but that jacket is covered by copper or some mixture of copper so that it will not harm a bore..
The Army has had some steel bullets and they were a little rough on bores..so they later plated them.
I guess that is what your referring to...

Steel core bullets maybe.
I have some 1909 Headstamped .303 brit ammo with silver bullets, but I imagine it is some form of coating.
As far as steel core bullets on game animals?
I guess it'd be good if the deer you were shooting at had 1/2" thick reactive armor on.

i have a handful of 6.5 steel jacketed bullets from what i assume was Swedish military ammo. i wanna load them in one of my .264 win mags and do penetration tests...
but i wouldn't think of using them on game. maybe cape buff. no, i'd just get stomped.

A lot of older bullets had cupro-nickel (I think) jackets that look like steel, but aren't.
A lot of imported 7.62 x 39, maybe most, has a soft iron jacket. Touch a magnet to them and they'll react.
Not many problems you can't fix With a 1911 and a 30-06

I have some NORMA 7x57 that will stick to a magnate and a Ray pointed out, have a coating on them.

i guess the new hornady bullet that was made for the replacement of the lead , is what i am getting at are these as acrate as the lead ones. Yes, GMX bullets are as accurate as common lead core bullets, altho any given rifle may shoot one more accurately than the other. are they easy to reload . Yes, they are as easy to reload as the usual lead-cored bullet. do they have the same killing power on game as lead . Yes. now are they hard on barrels They should be no harder on barrels than any common guilding-metal-clad bullet. --Bob

The Hornady GMX is made of Gilding metal, a copper alloy not steel.

with what i read there steel from there e-mail If there Hornady maybe you're talking about the "Dangerous Game Series"? They do have copper clad steel jackets with an "Ultra Tough Alloy Core"... Pics of DG seies bullets with a cutaway view Or...select the Dangerous Game series video... Video I have no experience with them but have heard they work just fine.

According to Hornady, the "tough alloy core" of their DGS (solid) and DGX (expanding) bullets is made of high antimony lead. These don't qualify as the "replacement for lead" that the original poster specified. Link to Hornady Catalog Page on DGS & DGX bullets --Bob

Kind of a vague thread from the get go...

The core is lead covered by steel and the steel is covered by a copper alloy on the DGS (solid) according to the Hornady rep I talked to at SCI last year.., not sure about the the DGX, I assume its a bonded core toughened lead core, with a copper alloy jacket..I know its plenty tough.
