I have a savage model 24 222 over a 20 gauge, that a guy wants to trade for a new savage model 40 in 22 hornet, I'm looking for a decent coyote gun out to two hundred I know the 222 is a much better caliber but at the same time I wouldn't mind a new savage is this a smart trade. What's the value of a model 24?

Don't know if I could part with a nice 24. Those are getting harder and harder to come by these days.

Irving_D, Last 24/222/20 gauge I had was about 20 years ago. Made a 'heck of trade' when let it go too. Haven't see a decent 222/20 24 since for sale or trade. 4198/50 grain Blitz 1 inch 100/20 gauge modified a 40yd gray fox/'yote killer with 2# & 4buck. The 20 Mod., also did about 3 inch @100 w/Win. slugs. Perfect little "grab and go', calling, varmint gun for me. Still kick myself in the butt when think about it.

Answer these questions:
Is the Savage 24 accurate enough for your needs? Not all Savage 24s shoot small groups.
Do I shoot factory ammo or do I reload? 222 factory ammo is generally less expensive then 22 Hornet factory ammo. If you wanted to shoot a lot of factory ammo, it might be worth spending $150+/- to have it rechambered from 222 to 223. If you reload, the 22 Hornet will use less powder, but case life might not be as long, probably a wash cost wise.
Is a combination gun more useful to me then a 22 Hornet varmint rifle? If you never shoot the shotgun barrel, probably not.
I don't care for the Savage 40s and I'm not much of a 22 Hornet guy, so I would probably keep the 24V and, if I wanted an inexpensive coyote rifle, I'd probably buy a Stevens 200 in 223 for under $300.

This is a great caliber combination. Very hard to find. Keep this gun and buy the Model 40.

Keep the 24, prices only get higher on those. Model 40 won't appreciate.

Keep your 24. As mentioned, they keep getting harder to find in good shape. I have a 22/20 gage and keep looking for a 22/410. I had one once, and did the dummy trick of selling it. Save money for a real Coyote rifle, like a 223, and hang on to the 24.

I have a hornet/20 and a 22/410... Pretty slick little things, though carrying enough funk to prove they are Savages.
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.

I have the Mod 24 DLX .22mag/3" 20ga with the etched satin receiver and gold trigger. I just picked up a rifle at my FFL buddy's and he told me that he has a .223/20ga that he is asking $600 for online.

I have the 30WCF/20G model and I think it is a permanent resident here at the Casa.
It is the handiest darn gun during our combo quail and deer season.

What is a reasonable price for a 22/410 in good shape? I have a friend who has a fiend who wants to sell one.

My very first gun was a Stevens .22/.410. I really enjoyed that gun. Eventually it got traded off for something else.
In later years I got a .22/20 gauge Savage. The stock was designed to have a scope installed i.e. quite high comb. It was almost impossible to shoot the shotgun barrel without getting my cheek bone smacked really hard. In addition the trigger was almost impossible. After work by a gunsmith it had a pull weight of about 9 lbs!
I sold it off to someone who wanted it more than me. Would never buy another one. YMMV.

When I bought my .22mag/20ga in the 70's, I thought that it would be the perfect turkey gun. Then when KS opened turkey seasons, it was shotguns only. When we bought a motorhome, it became the perfect camper gun. Never shot much, but 75,000mi on it. Now it works as a one man coyote gun over a call.
GunsAmerica is a good site for a frame of reference on gun prices.
