I over heard a local gun store owner telling a patron to be carefull buying a CMP Garand because legally you can never sell or trade them once you buy them. Anyone ever hear of that, if so, bull chit or real ?

You'll hear more lies in SOME gun shops than at the local Democrat headquarters.

Actually, back in the late 80's when I got one from them, you had to shoot and qualify at a range, then send them a finger print card and a signed affidavit saying you would never sell it.
All of this along with $160 and then wait and one day, an M1 Garand showed up at the door.
Granted this was done through the mail and not in a store so maybe that was the difference.
I got a couple of the 40x rimfires they had a few years ago and I didnt have to do all of that then so I guess they have changed it.

The CMP has stated that it's your property. Do with it what you want.
Thankfully you don't have to keep them forever. My kids could not afford my funeral if they had to bury all my CMP firearms with me.

CMP came out with a limit a number of years back because of all the people buying quantities for resale. They specifically said in the notice I received that this was the intent of the limit. The purpose of CMP (DCM) was for training civilians in marksmanship, not reselling rifles. I was glad to see it. I'd go to a gunshow and see tables with a dozen CMP rifles with papers at crazy prices. I think CMP was charging $400 and the scalpers were asking $600 to $900.
I do remember back in the '80s the paper you signed said you promised. not to sell it.

I hope they don't find out I sold my DCM rifle when I got my CMP Garand. because it shot better than the DCM piece.

I got my Garand from the CMP in Oct. 1996. I got fingerprinted and sent in the check and other proof of participation in an approved program in the spring of 1995. Spring '95 they were still the DCM, and that's what the check was made out to. Got notified in the fall that they had sold their quota for 1995 and I would be on the 1996 list. Still took until October 1996 and by then they had become the CMP. So I don't recall if it was a DCM rule in 1995 or a CMP rule in 1996, but I seem to remember that as being unable to sell it for at least one year. Wasn't planning to resell it so I didn't pay much attention to it, (still got it). My memory is a little vague on this one but does anybody recall those rules circa 1995 - '96 when they were transitioning from being the DCM to the CMP? Maybe some rules changed during that transition.

Me either, but that's what the notice said. So apparently there was no legally enforceable ban on resale.

Maybe Trump will let all the Garands that are overseas come home.

I'd like to get a CMP Garand one day but doubt it will ever happen. The nearest club is about 2 1/2 hours away.

You don't need to join a physical club, you can join the "garand collectors association" and similar clubs for minimal $$.

Wow.. Back in 1995 I had to shoot matches with my M1-A at an approved club; and go through all the fingerprinting and other red tape stuff. But when the Garand finally arrived it came right to my front door. Now it would have to go to an FFL, at least in NY state. Back then Bill Clinton was in the White House and I used to joke about the semi-automatic assault rifle that I mail ordered from Bill Clinton.
